I look small for my weight...

Recommended Posts

I weigh 236lbs, I'm 5'5 but I look a lot smaller then I weigh. I've struggled with my weight since I had my daughter 4 years ago. It just won't come off. No matter how hard I workout and different diets I try.

When I tell people I want to get the gastric sleeve. They look at me crazy.

Anyone experience this? How do you handle it? I'm kinda to the point where I wanna keep it a secret bc I hate the judgement?

I was in the same boat. Same weight and height. After my children I could not get the weight off. I was sleeved last Thursday and have been feeling great.

I didn't tell many people just my immediate family. I didn't want the judgement or them telling me I didn't weigh enough. I have been overweight my whole life, just got bigger after my babies. For work they wrote me a letter saving I was having abdominal surgery and no one asked questions.

I am already so happy with my decision. Best of Luck to you.????

That was the route I took -- told only hubby and two close friends who live nowhere near me.

This is a personal decision. Not a group experience.

And one thing I've learned is that for those who associate with other heavy people -- NONE of your friends and family will think you need WLS. You look just like they do. And THEY certainly don't need WLS! ;)

LOL!

I've had the same experience. However, once I decided to actually get the surgery, I only told a few people. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it once I get it done, and the weight starts coming off...

YES!!! The EXACT same experience. I am 5' 6" and I was around 250 pounds at my highest, 230 pounds at the time of surgery. People always said, "You carry your weight well. You do not look that big." Then I received a lot of negativity for wanting this surgery. People would say, "You're not that big. You can do it on your own." Ummm, I have been obese for 10 years, and despite the fact that I exercise (via step aerobics and running--3 miles), I have not been able to do it on my own. Well, I did not listen to anyone who was a nay-sayer, I did the sleeve and I LOVE my sleeve. Gaining control of the portions of food that I consumed made it so much easier to transition to a diet that weeded out bad foods (90% of the time!), and teach myself to consume quality-body-mind-loving food. Exercise became easier without all the excess weight, and I was able to take my fitness to a whole different level.

So, don't give power to the negative Nancy's!!! You know yourself and your body, and if this is what you want, you've got tons of people on here who've got your back!

Seriously thank you guys for the feedback! I'm feeling a lot better about my decision. I'm scheduled for surgrey in May. I can't wait :)

I've only told a handful of people. Two of them who don't believe I'm "big enough" are in different camps. One is a dear friend who herself has lost 150# with her sleeve. She's nearly a head taller than I am with a much larger frame, so I see where her perspective comes from. To her, I'm tiny. The other is my boss, who is herself tiny. I didn't tell her my weight, I told her my BMI. She was actually very complimentary; she just said "I just can't see where that extra weight is on you". Both of them have been totally supportive of my decision.

same boat here. it really stinks to actually be overweight and it starting to cause some other slight issues but to hear people say you "aren't fat enough" to need surgery. i really do think it is a slight jealously there with some people. my mom, hubby and a few other very close family members know but thats it. i don't need your opinions. after it is over with, i don't mind telling anyone because they won't be trying to talk me out of it. if they don't like it or have something nasty to say, i seriously have no problem just cutting them right out of my life. i have a serious problem with food and this looks to be my only option because nothing else has worked. I've done the research and i am ready to let food have way less control!!!

Same here! I am tall, very active, and healthy - so most people think it is crazy too. My sisters understand how hard I have tried to lose weight and that my joints are hurting now and they are super excited for me :) But to the average person I think they don't think I fit their preconceived notions of the size/type of person that has weight loss surgery. However, I met with the surgeon last week and they were very excited for me as well and think I will do great. I am keeping the surgery to myself and my family right now though because I don't want the comments.

I also " carry it well" at 254 right now and 5'8". Most people are shocked that my BMI is 40. I work in the OR as a surgical technologist, so I have been VERY open about it at work. We always discuss BMI as an indicator of how well a patient will do during surgery and during the recovery phase. There is no fooling surgical staff so I want them to be aware should I encounter any problems. I work in big Orthopaedic cases and lifting is a must. I am taking 6 weeks off from work because of all the heavy lifting I have to do with surgical instrument trays. I have had very few negative comments about it and I really appreciate the support! It will be interesting post op for sure! I'm gonna need to buy new scrubs!

Exact same boat. 5'5 and 230. I've only told a few people because I get the same reactions if I mention wanting to lose 80#. I used to be anorexic weighing 100 at my smallest. Finally got my weight under control making it to 145 pounds. Once I got pregnant I started discovering foods that I had avoided for 10 years and put on 100 pounds (not knowing how hard it would be to lose). At this point, screw anyone who has anything negative to say about me and how I look. This is all about YOU.

I am 5ft 6 inches and 235lbs I have told my family all are supportive except my Father.. He is obese to. He thinks I look good as I am and should diet and exercise. I have and failed over and over again. I went to a health camp for 4 weeks last year in April lost 8 lbs I exercised 4 hrs a day and lived on 800 calories a day. Of course not sustainable when I returned home plus it cost a bomb! I hope the sleeve works as dieting is 80% of my my problem! I am getting sleeved on the 9th Feb. I haven't told anyone else.

I was the same way, I'm 5'5. My surgical wt was 235. 1 wk post op and I am now 220lbs. I didn't think I looked real heavy. As a matter of fact, i have always embraced my size and wore it very well. However I have had so many medical problems including cancer until I decided I must get my weight under control. I finally realized that it was not cute to be over weight and unhealthy. That's when I decided I have to make a change. People tell me all the time "you are going to be so skinny" or "you are going to be sexy". I remind them oh I am already sexy, I am getting the surgery to become healthy! #Boom #Biggirlsaresexytoo

I used to say the same thing. That I carried my weight well and didn't really look like I weighed 235.

Now that I've lost the weight and look back at pictures of me at my heaviest, there was nothing "small" about me. And no, I didn't carry my weight well.

It will take you to lose the weight for everyone else to get a little perspective, too. You'll show 'em.

The thing about carrying your weight well is you carry it really well until one day you don't anymore. The weight, age and gravity catch up to you eventually. I carried my weight really well for a long time, then I was huge.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
