COPD/Emphysema and WLS

Recommended Posts

I have COPD/Emphysema and will be having LB surgery on October 16th. I would like to hear from others that have COPD and if the weight loss has helped any with your breathing and energy levels.

My primary physician says that my big stomach is keeping my lungs from expanding to full capacity by pushing up against my diagraphm. I am hoping that weight loss will help with my shortness of breath and energy levels. I know that I won't ever get full function back of my lungs, but I would like to have the ability to breath a little bit better and have a higher energy level so I can do things with my grandchildren that I cannot do now. Or, perhaps I am just dreaming of things that cannot be.

It would be nice to hear from others and their experiences.

I heard that people with COPD are not candidates for this surgery. My husband has COPD and a big belly but he is not no where over 100 pounds overweight I think he is 80 pounds but he is waiting for me to have mine that way he acn see how I do before he considers his.

I have mild to moderate emphysema and a BMI of 40. Otherwise, my health is good. My pulmonologist said that even if I had to have open WLS rather than LAP, he says potential benefits of WLS makes it worth the risk -- because people with COPD do much better when thinner. I too would love to hear from people with COPD who have had WLS, to hear whether breathing benefits have been substantial.

Thanks.

Janell

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
