When do I stop regretting my Gastric Bypass?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was December 7th, 2015. I know I'm barely about to get into the 5th week but not a day has gone by that I don't regret my choice. I find myself hating people for enjoying food while I'm stuck vomiting up 90% of anything solid I eat. I have random bouts of anger and sadness to the point where I have to leave, even my family and friends, just to be alone and slowly slip into memories where, despite being overweight, lonely, and miserable...I was still happier than I am now. I close my doors because the smell of food infuriates me. I lock them so my family and friends don't see how angry/sad I am. I stuff my head into headphones so I don't have to hear their joyous laughter and I lie to myself so I don't just vanish into obscurity.

...when I do stop regretting this?

6 months for me. 6 months of vomiting. Crying when I smelled good. Binge watching law and order criminal intent. Licking everything just to get a taste of it. Yup. 6 months till I felt "human" again. If it were not for Taco Bell pintos and cheese I may have perished lol and one pinto and cheese took me 3 days to eat!!

have you checked with your surgeon? Vomiting up everything you eat is a bit unusual. Maybe there's something going on (??). I would let them know.

I had the same issue to the point of throwing up blood. My therapist said it was just my "journey" it felt more like I got screwed lol I really thought I had a sticture but it went away around d the 6th month mark.

I don't regret my decision and I'm not vomiting but I do have similar feelings about food. I went to the strip mall that has my favorite take-out place and felt profoundly sad. I close my door to block out the smell of cooking food. I miss the comfort of something baked. The holidays were really hard. I can totally relate to those feelings.

to me it sounds like you were not ready for your surgery. But unfortunately, too late now. Maybe journaling some positive reasons why you had the surgery in the first place; I bet you have a large list of positive reasons. It certainly doesn't get easier as the further you are along the more variety of foods you will be able to eat thus making it possible that you won't reach your weight loss goal.

Generally after RNY gastric bypass surgery, one is restricted from eating solid foods until the 9th week. Your body needs to have time to heal before you subject it to solid foods.

I do not think I regretted the surgery. But it took 6 months before I reached a "happy state" when all the problems that I encountered after surgery seemed to be resolved.

Those first weeks are really rough, I cannot imagine what it would be like had I not been ready. It sounds like mentally that may be part of your challenge.

Also I agree with James, I was still on full liquids in week 3, puréed from weeks 4 through 7. Week 8 was the first time I was allowed solid soft foods.

You must give your new stomach time to heal before eating solids.

I would guess your pouch is pushing back hard.

If I were you, I would try going back to full liquids for a couple weeks. If you start throwing that up, call your surgeon, that is not normal.

The only time I ever throw up is if I over indulge in something I shouldn't have. I can really eat pretty much anything I want in small quantities. That does not mean I should.

You are also having some symptoms of depression. I think you need to remind yourself why you had this surgery in the first place. Focus on the goals you were searching for (keep your eye on the prize). I would also suggest speaking with a therapist that specializes in WLS.

Best of luck to you, I hope things get better for you soon.

Ahhh I remember feeling like this! I had chicken broth or Jello and everyone else was eating BBQ and cherry pie with ice cream! (my mother/family aren't the most supportive bunch) I actually missed eating like that... I know it all tasted so good! What did I do to myself that I couldn't eat/drink comfortably?!?! If I can get through that, you can. The goal was much more important than the pie.

Like other posters have said, it was about the 6 month mark before I could even drink somewhat normally, and now I taste things, but I don't eat that piece of pie. When I went on pureed foods, I threw up sometimes, and just learned to be extra careful. Its all kinda part of the learning process I think.

If you think you are just getting overly upset, maybe talk to a professional?

Ditto. Finally really started feeling more normal at 6 months. Hang in there. I can assure you that at 113 pounds down, I do not regret it at all now!

I had same feelings. I looked at other people and thought they are so lucky. But it will pass I promise. And then you will be buying cute clothes you never dreamed you would be wearing. Better yet.....you won't know what your style is and start wearing clothes you like instead of clothes that just fit. What you are going through is so normal. Give it six months. You will feel much better. Hang in there

The first month or so is tough, but I've never regretted it once. At five months out I find myself unconsciously avowing day to day that "I'm never letting this new body go". And I'm not even at goal yet. I love how I feel, how I look, and how much easier it makes everything.

I was lucky that I didn't have any complications and I've never dumped. But please try and hang in there. One day soon the worst will be behind you and you'll realize just what a gift this surgery can be!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
