Any link between weight loss and geographic tongue?

Recommended Posts

I just got back from the dentist and was diagnosed with geographic tongue (benign migratory glossitis). I have never even heard of this before now and have never known anyone with it. While it appears pretty harmless (aside from looking weird when I stick my tongue out), I'm wondering why I'm getting this now and if there's a correlation between it and my surgery/weight loss. My surgery was Aug. 27. I've only lost 50 lbs since (which isn't a lot compared to some), but I lost 31 lbs in the 4 months before surgery for a total weight loss of 81 lbs in just over 8 months. I would appreciate any thoughts of knowledge anyone has about it as there's not much information on-line except that it's harmless, no treatment exists, different theories about cause/they're not sure of the cause, etc.

thanks

Not sure if it has anything to do with weight loss or weight gain but I have the same kind of tongue. I was told it was a fissured tongue but I have always had it and you probably have too, its just that I never realized my tongue was different than most others until I was older.

I have often wondered if that is why I am not a fan of very spicy food.

No I just looked it up and there is a difference between geographic tongue and fissured.

This is new to me. I know I've never had this before so I was wondering if there's a correlation or if it's just coincidence.

Here is what I found... I'd never heard of it before but it makes sense that post WLS there may be some sort of Vitamin deficiency.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
