Medication/Pills during the first few weeks

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

Did anyone have a hard time swallowing pills after the initial surgery? I've been told that you can't "gulp" beverages after the surgery but I'm worried I will have a difficult time taking my regularly prescribed medication. Especially right after the surgery and weeks to come. Any advice?

the only pill I waited on taking whole was ursodiol, because the capsule was pretty big. I think I started taking that the 3rd week out. Everything else I started taking as soon as I got home from the hospital. Never had any problems with them

I've been cutting mine into pieces to make them easier to swallow. I wouldn't be able to get them down whole with just a sip of Water. I'm hoping it will get easier as time goes on, I'm just 1 week post-op.

At the pre-op education class I went to (in MN), a pharmacist talked to us all and told us to use a pill splitter to make them the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. I would follow-up with your doctor/surgeon because some meds can't be split. I hope you find a solution! Good luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
