Not getting much support from husband

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of getting sleeved ... All the appointment requirements ... Should be able to submit everything to my insurance company the end of February. Anyway my husband is not really supportive of the surgery . I think he might feel as if he's losing his eating partner , he constantly tells me " oh your NEVER going to eat that again. " . He tells me I am making the biggest mistake in my life that I will regret my surgery . Anyone else deal with a partner that wasn't as supportive as you would like and how did you deal with that????

My fiance has been extremely supportive but I myself had feelings of "I'm never going to eat that again". One of our bonding rituals has always been cooking and eating together so I was worried that we would lose that. It was difficult until I got to solid foods but now we are able to cook and eat together like we used to. He's actually been eating healthier as a result. If he wants something that I'm not allowed (like a cheeseburger) then he cooks that while I cook my own food. Maybe just remind your husband that there will be changes at first but eventually you'll find your "new normal". I would also remind him that, as your partner, it's important that you have his support.

As for the regret part, I was an emotional basketcase the first two weeks or so. I had deep feelings of anger, frustration, and regret. All that leveled out and now the only regret I have is not doing this sooner.

Also, I should say that my fiance was very nervous and apprehensive of me getting surgery. My dad was also apprehensive. I basically told them that I had spent 6 months doing research and had already made up my mind. At that point, I was not interested in hearing from any naysayers. I could tell they were still apprehensive but they respected my decision enough to support me. Now that I'm post op and have lost 34 pounds in 73 days, they are both very happy that I did it.

It sounds to me like he is afraid of change. Just keep reassuring him, like Southern Sleever said, you will have lots of changes for a while but you will settle into a "new normal" & some of the changes may enhance his life too.

It's too bad that we don't know when our expiration date is. I figured mine would be age 67, because that is when my mother (5'2" and 320 pounds) suffered a fatal abdominal aortic aneurysm. I was 63 when I had the surgery. If your doctor told you that you have only four more years to live unless you have bariatric surgery, you wouldn't hesitate to speak up for yourself and get the deed done. Thank goodness that you are a woman 'fully growed" who can make her own decisions about her health.

I agree that he probably feels threatened. But you can't let him make this about himself. This has to be about you and getting healthy. Losing this extra weight makes all the difference in your quality of life. Married or not, you shouldn't let anyone steal your power or hold you back. I wish you the best. Hugs from Chicago.

My husband was not happy either with my decision either. He is worried that I will regret it... He knows how much I love love love food.. He is also worried about the surgery its self.... My date is Dec 29th and I can't wait... I am fearful but think this is the right decision for me..

Well, he's right -- he may well be losing his eating partner. Especially if he means his "pig out partner."

What he may be afraid of is that he's losing the person who gives him permission to abuse his body and lead a very unhealthy lifestyle.

But I don't know him. You do.

One thing I kept hearing when I was just getting started on this path is that when we change our lives, that change affects those we have close relationships.

Sounds like it's time for some intimate conversations -- to find out what his fears really are about. It's probably a better approach than wondering or guessing what he's afraid of.

Well my husband at the beginning was not supportive BUT I kept going foward with my plan because it was me with the " weight issue" sometimes ppl can't understand when they are not in your shoes... In your body... You are the one that need the change... If you dnt feel healthy, comfortable with ur self and u r unhappy then you will need this for your OWN GOOD FIRST!!!! I learn my husband was and still is a little bit scare but I am doing this for my health and if h r really loves me and wants to see me better than he just has to support me, he doesn't have to approve my desition But as my husband Support my need! But it has to start with you... If you are confident that this is what you want encouraged you to go foward... But always supervised by doctor and go by instructions. Time Will only tell. But you have motivate your self first hun.

Thanks everyone for the support . Such good advice I thank you .... This morning I had a dr appointment with my primary dr and he's glad I have made the decision to follow thur with the sleeve. He knows my husband and made a good point maybe when he sees what a success I will have maybe he will consider weight loss surgery also. Yes he is losing his pig out partner but I will start to be the one to lead a healthy life style and maybe that will rub off on him??? Who knows but I will follow thru with surgery and live healthy ! I can't wait!!!

@@Deb_o64 - I have been blessed with a very SUPPORTIVE husband and 24 y/o son at home. My 29 y/o daughter wasn't too happy about making a permanent change (she wanted me to do the lap-band).

Once I began eating pre-op (early April) my hubby started losing weight too.

In July he hopped on the scale and I saw he weighed 219, I weighed 221 :( I KNEW I was really close to finally weighing less than him in about 7 or 8 years...the next week I was 219 and he was too...he didn't understand why I was fist pumping until I confessed :D

I am happily 32 pounds lighter and he is maintaining the 220 range at the moment. We eat healthier and we eat out a lot, still, but we share (or I get an appetizer).

You are at one point you might regret it, you are going to ask your self what did I do to myself? But it is a normal thought and process, I'm sure a lot of people on here have said it to themselves at least once, I know I did. And support is the key! I'm so sorry that your husband is not emotionally supportive right now, it may stem from fear. And you have all of us now

Non-supportive dudes are idiots.

They must be clueless as to the new you that is going to arrive soon. That new you will be supercharged & sexy....in mind and body.

What kind of guy is so stupid as to not support THAT ?????

I guess I am lucky. My husband would not qualify for the surgery on our insurance (BMI too low), but he struggles with his weight. During my pre-op diet, he did the liquids and Protein shakes right along with me, with the ok of our PCP. He lost about 20 pounds since this started for me.

He's back to eating normally, and is trying to eat more sensible, so maybe perhaps he can beat it on his own. He started gaining weight when he quit smoking 16 years ago. When we met and started dating, he was still smoking, and was at the high end of 'normal' weight for his height. Now he's at a BMI of 33 with his weight loss with me. He's bounced between 33 and 34 for 16 years.

I am in the process of being sleeved as a low BMIer. (30-35) and he wasn't supportive at first when I decided on this 2 months ago, but he is getting better as time goes on. Give it some more time

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
