Intro and some questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'm new to this site and I am honestly so glad I found it! I am one week post op today and I'm having a hard time mentally. I feel great physically, but I'm afraid to eat. And I keep thinking about the future and how I will always be taking a risk for dumping with every new food. Basically no amount of mental preparation could get me ready to face my food addiction like this.

How did you guys get through it?

To people that are further out, any trouble with non puréed foods? I'm terrified of throwing up. :/

Welcome to the site and congratulations on taking such a big step.

I understand your fear. But, you have got to eat. I would suggest that you go slow by trying one new food at a time. Eat very small bites, chew thoroughly (when you get to food you can actually chew), and take your time eating. If something doesn't agree with you, don't push it. Just try it at a later time if you want.

You will gain more confidence as you become successful.

You might want to consider using an appetizer or toddler-size spoon or just the very tip of a regular teaspoon to take tiny bites.

Most people with sleeves don't have dumping problems. You're not going to be eating high-carb or high-sugar items for a very long time, if ever.

Hi and welcome!

Are you having the sleeve? Because as a rule, sleevers don't dump. And i'm 15 month out, and havn't thrown up once ;) From about 3 month on, I could eat anything I wanted with no problems. I now have a normal, healthy life at 141 pounds. Besides not being able to eat a whole bunch in one sitting, I wouldn't even know I had 85% of my stomach removed.

Keep in mind as you're going through the early, more challenging stages:

It won't always be like that. Soon you will be 15 months out and won't even feel like you've had surgery except for the restriction.

Good luck and keep us posted!

As others have mentioned dumping is rare in sleevers. That doesn't mean there won't be foods that disagree with you, but in general if you eat slowly and remember to separate eating from drinking you should be fine. I am 14 mths out and have never experienced dumping.

Guys thank you so much! That is all super helpful info. Just to see it from people that have lived it is awesome. This is really a great place to come to for support.

Some folks are absolutely freaked by the idea of vomiting. I get it (my SIL is this way). But the advice is good. As my RD put it: treat your sleeve like a baby. Add one new food at a time, in small amounts. Feel good after? Super! Feel not-so-good after? Put that food aside, and try it again in a few weeks.

Listen to your body. If your list of allowed foods includes (for example) poached egg, and the very idea of a poached egg sounds awful, don't feel you need to try it right now. Wait awhile. This isn't a race to see how soon you can go back to "normal" foods.

Thank you! I really appreciate all the kind words. (: and real life advice! It's hard to remember I'm basically starting over and I need to treat my new stomach like a baby. But I am learning for sure. (:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
