No Nutritionist in my group..

Recommended Posts

So I come to find out that there is no Nutritionist within my bariatric group.. I'm confused as to why.. But now I'm also having trouble finding one. I thought it was standard for them to have one?! Anyone on Long Island that and help me out.. Maybe you know someone. Thanks

Your local hospital will have Registered Dieticians on staff who also see outpatients. My hospital has one who sees all their bariatric patients.

I don't know how standard it is these days, it seems that some groups have them and some don't. My doc's group didn't have one, as they provide that function on their own via their RN program director, surgeon and PA's transmitting their combined experience in the craft. I saw an RD associated with my PCP a couple of times, and she used the surgeon's guidelines to help me tailor a program around it that fit my needs.

You can usually find an RD (Nut) on staff at any hospital. The main thing to watch for with them is that frequently the primary bariatric experience they have is with the RNY, which is somewhat different from the sleeve in nutritional requirements (RNY patients are often given more calories per day to account for their malabsorption that sleevers don't have, which can lead to slower or inadequate weight loss). If your surgeon has guidelines (they usually have some kind of booklet of instructions published), take that along when you see the RD.

The suggestions to call the hospitals in your area make good sense, of course. I take it that your own practice doesn't have an RD or two that they recommend?

You can also try asmbs.org (check the "state chapters" link) or lipo.org (LI Post Ops).

You may get a few LI people stopping in out of curiosity. If I may, however, a tip for the future: If you want to attract BP users on LI, mention it in your topic title.

Do you have ShopRite grocery stores on LI? Im in NY about 3 hours away from LI. Some of our Shop Rites (the larger stores) have dietitians/nutritionists on site. I had one of my NUT visits at a local ShopRite. No co-pay the service is free & they emailed my visit info to my Dr's office.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
