I'm 7 weeks out today and have had a pretty easy recovery. The only pain I experienced was from engaging my stomach and ab muscles to get up out of the recliner. I think I only took maybe three doses of pain medicine in the entire 7 weeks post op. I wasn't quite prepared for the emotional toll the surgery took on me but I felt better around the 3 week mark. I was also pretty tired and low on energy for the first week or so. I went back to work on day six but only for half days.

Good luck!

@ @@aleja908 - it depends on a few things.

I was sleeved on 5/6/15 - first patient in OR that morning. I had an uneventful surgery and walked as much as impossible and as soon as possible. The hardest part for me was not being able to drink anything until the leak test. I thought I would be tested early the next day - nope ;( It was closer to noon and I was ready to drink anything. I was also a little uncomfortable with the catheter and was able to get it removed (because I was up and moving) and felt that I could "go" on my own. If you can drink until midnight, do it. The more hydrated the better for you and the OR team (finding veins, etc).

good luck both of you and keep us posted!

Going under the knife tomorrow too. So super excited! Aleja908, maybe the post-op forum has better answers on what to expect.

Good luck everyone!

Congrats and good luck!!!

My biggest savior for pain relief from the air I had trapped from the surgery, was heating pads. Also, when I could not get fluids down (due to the excess internal swelling), sugar free Popsicles went down really well for me--they were my life line!

@@aleja908, I had to drink 2 oz before they released me, which was the day after surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
