How open were/are you on social media about your surgery?

I don't feel ashamed for my choice, but I do know many people view WLS as "an easy way out." I just don't feel like defending anything, but, on the same note, want to inspire others I know that are fighting a losing (gaining) battle with their weight. So far, I think my plan is to wait until the day or surgery, then "come out", so to speak. Most of My family knows and very close friends I talk to daily. The first time I told anyone outside of my inner circle, I got the judgey looks and was told it wasn't necessary and to just eat right and exercise (trainer at the gym).

I posted on FB about my surgery the night before. I asked for people's love, thoughts, prayers and support. NO ONE was negative at all. I don't pretend to assume that no one has said a negative thing about me behind my back, but that's their weakness, not mine.

I still have not said anything on any social media besides this website. I, too, just don't feel like having to explain and defend my choice to a bunch of "well meaning" but utterly ignorant people. I'm pretty sure no one would be malicious to me, as I simply don't have friends like that. But in my opinion this is the kind of thing people already have preconceived notions about, and it's hard to change those opinions even with education sometimes. Education may change their minds logically but I can say almost for certain that there will people people - even close friends and family maybe - who have already decided to believe that wls is the easy way out, and I just don't want to deal with it. Got enough on my plate (hehe).

All in all, the support from your friends and family can be great, but it's up to you if you want to take the chance. I personally chose not to but not everyone has the luck or the sensitive nature I have. :P

My other thought is to wait until I'm significantly smaller before posting any full body shots and just saying I did it (got thin)without specifying how beyond diet and exercise

I've thought about this too. I haven't said anything on FB about it...and I'm a FB girl! But I don't think I want to say anything until it's all over and I'm on the way...IF THEN. I'm very transparent with my life, however, and I think I will post about it at that time. Probably. If people start complimenting me, i'm not going to evade the truth. But the surgery will be over and I will be on to my "new life" by that time. What I will NOT like, however, is if people watch what I eat, like at family gatherings, church events, etc. That will bug me. Obviously, I won't be eating much the first few months but I really don't want them talking about me, like, "Is THAT ALL you can EAT???" UGH.

I was hoping to find a "secret" Facebook group for suppoet. I asked a couple people I know who had surgery but have not found one.

There are fb groups for each surgery. I'm in both.

I'm pretty open on fb, too. It's killed me not to say anything

They are private. Nothing posted shows up on your feed

CLOSED groups or SECRET? In closed groups, posts are private but anyone can see that you are in the group.

Closed private but not secret.

If it was secret, you wouldnt be able to find them. Secret groups don't even show up in search results

Yeah, I honestly think I could only ever join secret groups, like the one run by my hospital's support group. If your whole friends list gets a notification that you joined "bariatric surgery patients" or or whatever you might as well just tell everyone anyway. :o

I've told a few ppl: my husband, my mom, a good friend who is long distance, and the doctor I work for. That's it. I know ppl will be judgey. The doctor I work for has been. I've lost some weight on a diet set by the nutritionist and he's like "Now you won't need the surgery, right?" Um, no. Because I've been down this road before and I stop after like 20lbs lost. So as far as social media, or anyone really, I've discussed with my support peeps that I'll just have the surgery and if ppl ask about weight loss, or anything well I work hard at what I eat lol

I understand that I cannot find secret groups, I am hoping to be invited when I meet anyone who is a member.

No one gets notification for groups I join that are closed. I'm in A LOT of BST groups plus the surgery groups. No one knew, and I only see notifications for friends that joined open groups, not closed

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
