Saving for sleeves!

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for anyone else whose saving for their sleeve.

My insurance went cover it, I don't have a hiatal hernia, I can't take on anymore debt, and I'm not sure if I want to travel once I have enough saved to have it done cheaper in Mexico.

I've met with and chosen my surgeon, completed and passed psyc eval, scheduled sleep study, and built my support system.

I just need to keep saving to get my sleeve. If you are in a similar situation, maybe we can keep each other accountable and encouraged until we reach our goals.

I was self-pay for my sleeve as well. My insurance only covers WLS if you have a documented BMI of over 40 for more than 5 years. I had lost 90 pounds "on my own" back in 2010/2011 and my BMI had JUST crept back up over 40 when I started looking into WLS in the summer of 2014. I didn't want to wait another 5 years! And I felt like I was being punished for at least TRYING to get and keep the weight off myself.

Anyway I went to Mexico (had been to Mexico for surgery before so I had no hang-ups there), which saved me a fair amount of money. I ended up borrowing from my retirement account to pay for it. If you have a retirement plan through your employer, you should look into that option. It comes out to be a VERY low interest rate option, because most of the interest just goes back to YOU into your retirement account.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
