Soooo hi everyone my name is Valeria, I'm trying to get the gastric bypass done, so far everything is going great, I have the 2 psychology app one is next week and the other is in the week after... I feel like everything is going great but even thou I just feel scared, for some reason not being able to get the surgery done, my highest weight is 277 and my goal is 155..... They asked me to lose 10-20 pounds before surgery, but do to soooooo much stress, scared, feeling like the days are not going by fast enough I can't seem to lose the weight they ask me to ! "I CANT CONTROL MY SELF IM SO STRESS OUT " I'm so scared of not being able to get it because of it !...Aright now questions ....

-Would they simply not do the surgery because I didn't lose any weight pre-op (10-20 pounds) ?

-Would the insurance company say no to the surgery after all the appointments I'm going to in order to get the surgery done ( this is when the approval is sent to the

insurgence company )

-Do you have any idea of how long does a takes to make the surgery do-date after the psychology appointment (because I'll be done with the physiology and nutritionist appointments by October 27)

- Any tips on how to calm down ? I wake up thinking about it I go sleep thinking about it ! I'm going crazy ! It feels like a eternity.... I've been trying Yoga and doing some simple work outs to take my mind of it but it's just so hard sense i don't have the date set yet which not having is just driving me insane!

Hello there!

First off, congrats on taking a step in the right direction in getting healthy! As far as some of your questions go, I may have some answers.

My doctors didn't give me a weight to lose before surgery, but I was on a two week liquid diet before surgery, and lost a good 20 pounds. As far as getting denied, it's all up to insurance. I'm not sure what insurance you have, but each one is different. You have to do all these steps and appointments before they submit it. After that, it's no longer in your hands. If you are denied, your doctor can resubmit and find out how to get you approved. With the stress, you really need to find a way to relax. Stress does not help. Try journaling your thoughts or going for a walk. Everything will happen in time, just enjoy the ride. :)

Oh my thank you sooo much !!! ♥️ I'll deff try something to calm me down, it's just that i have been 16 years Suffering with my weight (which is sense I was 3 years old) and all I can remember is going to nutritionist, I have probably gone to no less then 50 of them and never helped, and now that I'm just sooooo close to getting the surgery in the same time a feels soooooo far away (if that makes any sense ) Hahahaha I'm freaking out... but thank you for getting back to me !

Relax.

The purpose of pre-op weight loss is to shrink your liver. Why do they need to shrink your liver? So they can see more clearly while they are operating on you. A liver that is "too fat" makes it hard to get around when the laprascopic tools are in the area. I have heard stories of people going in to surgery and coming out without bypass. Their livers were too big to complete the surgery.

Plus a lot of insurance companies won't approve your surgery if you have GAINED ANY WEIGHT during the six month pre-op supervised diet. I should know, it happened to me after only gaining TWO POUNDS in my last month of weigh in. Super frustrating.

I don't want to sound harsh but you need to get a grip. The ride you are about to take is a roller coaster and even months after surgery, your emotions, stress level, anxiety, a feeling of being overwhelmed will still be issues to deal with.

If you can't control those same emotional problems now, you will have one hell of a time over the next 10-12 months of your life. When you do the psych eval, you need to be COMPLETELY honest with them about what you are feeling. Let them help you, help yourself.

I know (most of us know) how you are feeling and it is stressful, intense, worrying, overwhelming and induces anxiety. You have to work on making everything healthy not just losing weight. The complete package has to have a complete overhaul; your relationship to food, the way you handle stress, the activities you do when bored, what you do for fun, all of it needs a make-over. This process is not easy and it takes an immense amount of dedication, patience and discipline.

With all that said, there is a wide variety of support on this forum. Many of us want nothing more than to see our WLS peers be successful. Asking questions, obtaining honest feedback and being honest with yourself are the first steps into WLS success.

You can do this!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
