Did any of you struggle with night eating syndrome, or getting up in the middle of the night to eat?? This is something I did as a kid, and then not for years... until recently. I think it's the stress of prepping for surgery/all the appointments/etc (not to mention I'm applying to graduate school at the same time....). But I'm really worried about how it's going to affect my surgery process.

I have an appointment with my therapist on the 19th--I'm going to come clean to her first. I'm almost positive I don't meet clinical criteria for night eating syndrome (I work with the diagnostic manual, so I'm very familiar with it), but I am occasionally getting up to have a small snack at night. While I remember it, I'm still very sleepy and have nearly no control at that time. A few nights ago it was a handful of pretzels. Last night it was about 5 marshmallows. Overall, I'm not eating a lot of calories, but I'm really concerned about what'll happen once my stomach literally cannot handle anything of texture/size.

I'm contemplating buying some cupboard locks for post-surgery, but I'd prefer to get this under control now, when I don't have to worry about complications to my pouch or gaining all the weight back.

Anyone have similar stories who can share their wisdom or encouragement?

If you are almost positive you don't meet clinical criteria for night eating syndrome then I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like you are too stressed out already. I remember there were times prior to surgery when I would raid the food cabinets in the middle of the night. I am 29 months post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery and I do not feel the urge to do that anymore. I wouldn't go to the extreme of buying cupboard locks at this time, just focus on the requirements for surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
