Getting my house ready for surgery

Recommended Posts

I am nervous about having everything I need at home and accessible since there's no one to help me post surgery.

I don't have a lounge chair or whatever you call a BarcaLounger that I've heard some people sleep in whist healing. I'm a stomach sleeper so this will be tricky. Also I want to make sure I have all my Water and Protein handy.

Any suggestions?

Don't worry too much. There are tons of us who do this on our own and we do fine. Make sure that any heavy housecleaning is done beforehand, you won't want to be pushing a mop or a vacuum cleaner around. If you have a cat, make sure the litter box is changed right before surgery (lifting restrictions).

I found a body pillow was helpful for sleeping during the first couple of weeks. Also helpful: taking my narcotic pain meds shortly before bed! I stopped taking them during the day very quickly but they did help me at night.

Water you should be able to get from the tap, right? And if you find yourself running low on Protein or just about anything else, you can likely get Amazon or some other company to deliver it to your doorstep within a day or two. You will be fine. Good luck! ^_^

Good morning, I too had the same questions. I live alone too and are trying to think of getting organized ahead of time. My surgery is scheduled for first week in Nov 2015. I am actually having lap band removed and have the sleeve. I am so excited.

I understand how you feel.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
