60 Yrs and Pre-Op and having psych eval and nervous wreck

Recommended Posts

hi everyone, I'm new to this site and I'm in the midst of getting everything done for my surgery, however, tomorrow is my psych apt before I see my surgeon next month....I am terrified about this psych apt, I don't have a food addiction, if you tell me I can't have it then I don't eat it, I don't eat secretly I don't stop at fast foods, I just made wrong choices at the wrong time of day is all and was inactive, bad combo....I am already approved for the surgery by my insurance company so I don't want my evaluation from the psychologist to be the sticking stone that eliminates me....or am I worrying for nothing? Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi Wendy and welcome. From my experience the psych evaluation was a breeze. They really just want to assure that you're educated about the surgery and have a realistic view of how you'll need to change your lifestyle in order to work it to its fullest potential. They also usually ask about your past dieting history, your family life and support system etc. Just relax and be yourself. You'll do fine!

Yes, you are worried for nothing. They want to make sure you are ready for what you are about to go through.

They offer advice on how to deal with issues. For example I tend to eat when I am bored. So they have taught me to recognize this and stop this behavior.

You will do fine I am sure. Just be yourself. It is the people that try to trick the doctor that end up with delays. Just be true to yourself and honest with them and everything will work out.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
