What does a leak feel like?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had my sleeve almost 3 years ago. About 4 months ago, I started having really bad diarrhea . I went to a gastroenterologist and he did a colonoscopy and blood work. He diagnosed me with IBS and have me some pills to take with my meals to calm my digestive system. And said to keep living on Imodium AD until I got better.

Now, it's gotten worse. My stomach will cramp, I get all sweaty, feel like I might vomit and I'm shaking and sometimes my body will twitch. I'm also very tired & have no energy.

Has anyone else had these symptoms? I'm really scared.

You didn't say what blood work had been done, nor if an EGD had been done. What about an allergist for food allergies?

Blood work was done by my PCP to check my liver, kidneys, etc. Then the gastroenterologist did some to check my thyroid. They all came back fine. Things rumble and bubble as they go

Through my digestive system. This has been going on for 4 months and it just keeps getting worse. I've left a message with the gastroenterologist asking if they can do a CT scan. What is the test you are asking about?

What type of blood work? CMP, BMP, did you do a food diary for the GI doc? Did they do a pill scan of your GI tract? An EGD is a camera down the throat, like the colonoscopy is up the other end.

Sorry, I don't know what all this stuff means. They did CMP, CBC w/ Auto Diff, Auto Diff & I don't have the paperwork to know what the gastroenterologist did but he said it was to check my thyroid.

Did he do just TSH or did he include T4, T3, free T ...

Did they do any tests for celiac, a sed rate, stool analysis? Has an allergist tested you for food *intolerances*? I have those big time. Not technically allergic, but give me something and I get diarrhea or pain, etc.

The IBSchek test? Just came out in May.

Did they go through the Rome III criteria?

Basically they do stuff to rule things out. It sounds like they did a quick type of test but didn't get do anything thorough. Its more like what they call a trash can dx. They didn't find anything easy and just went for the most appropriate item.

They did do tests for celiac and they did stool samples. I'm not going to take his diagnosis. I'm going to keep pushing. If he won't cooperate, I'll go

Back to the Dr that did my surgery. I just want to know if anyone else has gone through this and what it was.

I still have gastroparesis, I developed reflux and IBS after. I have food intolerances to many things. That is the current list I can think of GI tract wise. What I've said to you is what I've had tested (that and more).

The only thing I can do to help is go over what blood, urine, xray/US/CT/MRI's have been done for me. Sometimes you develop things and I had problems before the surgery. I know of someone who developed GP after the surgery. Things happen.

All we can do is test until we know what we know and what we don't know. I'm sorry that's not a feel good answer. :(

A leak is a seam that during surgery didn't quite close the stomach pouch and digestive juices can "leak"/ get into the rest of the body cavity causing "septic shock" (poisoning) and can be fatal. I had such a leak and nearly died. It is extremely urgent to consult with your doctor if you suspect you have one.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
