Did you tell anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am considering sleeve surgery probably by November this year.

After a LIFETIME of trying to lose weight, the struggles, challenges, emotions, depression etc. and lots of well meaning people telling me I look OK, I should accept myself, etc. etc. etc. .... I don't know if I want to tell anyone !!!

Did you tell everyone, or just some people? Were people supportive or judgmental? One of my friends was talking about someone she knew who had WLS and said she didn't understand why she took the "easy way out" !!!! made me so mad !!!!

I told people and got different reactions. Some, you go, girl. Others were worried. Maybe they didn't know what to say. If they say, go for it, they might think, I'm telling you you're heavy. Some people said...you're not that big. To be honest, I knew the sleeve was right for me. No one knows your struggle. I've never been happier. Good luck!

I have struggled for the last few weeks as to weather to tell my extended family, heck, my dad and step mom. I was taunted as a kid by my step-mom about my eating, weight and pretty much everything I wore. She was very hateful... Looking back I realize she was young, barely 20 (my dad was 25), and was learning how to parent so I don't hold it against her anymore. Anyway, I told them today... I got a "thanks for letting us know, have a speedy recovery." Better than I expected... She lost about 40lbs on WW and has always been vocal about thinking WLS was an "easy fix." I plan to let them know my surgery date when it's scheduled and when I get home but other than that... I have no desire to discuss it with them. I'm 31!!! Not 5... I only need my husband's and close friend's support. BTW: my dad and step-mom live 2500 miles away... It's not like they will be here to help.

I only told my mom, my sister and ofcourse my husband! I have a lot of judgemental extended family members and just felt like they didn't need to know. It's my decision and my choice and I don't need there negative opinions. I'm very happy with my decision, you just need to do what is best for you and what you are comfortable with!

I tell everyone! It's my approach that keeps them from being so judgmental. I say that I'm taking control of my health and will be having the surgery as a tool to ensure that I don't suffer from health issues farther down the line. I don't believe it's the easy way out, and having tried so many different methods, I need to use the most medically proven effective method to get my health back. I'm 33 with 2 kids and I could leave them way too early if I don't get my priorities straight. Not one single person has given me a hard time, but rather offer positive reassuring words and sometimes even have a friend or relative that have also benefited from the surgery. Occasionally they have a story of someone who lost weight then gained it all back- but that won't be me!

I told my parents, sisters and 3 close friends. My husband had his surgery 3 weeks prior to mine. I said in another post similar to this one that people expect you to be suddenly slim. I didn't want others expectations imposed on me, along with my own. 70+ pounds down, now I tell the people that I feel led to tell.

Thanks all.... helps to know what you all think. I am so tired of people judging me! I KNOW there are so many people that think "... all you need to do is eat less, work out more ... " "surgery is the easy way out" I am SO tired of people being uninformed. Not sure I want to be the one to inform them tho :-)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
