All of the different surgeries have their merits, and what is best for one person may not be best for the next person. Really it comes down to how much weight you need to lose, your medical history, current health issues, your own preferences, the list goes on. I chose the RNY (my surgery is early monday morning! yikes!) for many reasons, namely because my surgeon recommended it, I have a LOT of weight to lose, and I am willing to risk more and do more to alter my digestive system because I perceive that it is the right choice for me. I would recommend watching some youtube videos of the different surgeries, perhaps watch some peoples' experiences with the different ones, and ask you surgeon what he or she recommends, as they have a lotttt more experience than any of us. This site is a great resource too, hopefully some other people who have had the various surgeries will be able to tell you some of their own experiences with them. Good luck! Keep us posted. :)

Thank you so much . I'm 5'2 close to 300 pounds I feel like I have a lot to loose. I'm just scared.lol. I don't want to get sick and I was told bypass is the worst. I researched sleeve for 5 months never thought about bypass till a doctor told me more and more people are upset with their results from the sleeve and the bypass weight lose is more and there is more research on it being as though the sleeve is a new surgery.

If you haven't already take a class on the differences between the surgeries. One big reason to consider bypass over sleeve or lap and is whether or not you suffer from reflux/Gerd. The sleeve and band can make this illness much worse potentially requiring a revision to bypass down the road.

In some cases, the sleeve and Lapband caused someone who never got reflux/Gerd to get it.

Bypass in most cases cures this disease.

If you don't suffer from reflux/Gerd then the sleeve may be the right choice for you. I have seen many many people lose just as much weight with the sleeve as one who has bypass.

My surgeon gave me simple facts to help with my decision. Research shows higher long-term weight loss success with rny than other procedures. However, according to this site, the sleeve seems to have good results too. I chose rny because of this and despite the adjustment, I'm very happy with it.

Attend a support group session and that will be helpful to you as well.

My surgery is in 2 days. I am having RNY and that is what I wanted with my research.

I am diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver, but I only need to lose about 60 lbs.

The bipass has an excellent chance to get me off insulin and most of my meds almost immediately.

My doctor told me it was the best for my metabolic problems.

You need to see the surgeon and see what he recommends for you. They know what is best for you.

Whatever surgery you have, you will lose weight but you will have to adapt your eating habits and have a complete change in the relationship you have with food!

Good luck, and take care of yourself.

Do your research, ask questions, read, and repeat!

Ultimately, you and your surgeon will need to weigh the risks and benefits for each procedure based on your specific needs and issues.

I was sleeved April 20 and couldn't be happier with my choice of surgeon and procedure.

Best of luck with your journey.

I have first surgeon appointment September 2. Very excited to start process. I am sure I want Roux en Y. I am 5'10" and weigh 300lbs. I need to lose 130 -150 lbs. I just can't wait to get the ball rolling. This is a great platform for posting the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes us understand that, while we are starting on a great journey, there will be a few bumps in the road. And that's ok. Love reading the posts.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
