2nd lapband and still having issues

Recommended Posts

I got my first band in July 2012..we got along great. I lost 120 pounds and felt like a million bucks..then the slip happened in April, 2014. Thought I was going to die. I was rushed to the ER in an Ambulance- vomiting blood and unable to hold down spit. My band was removed via emergency surgery. for the next 6 months I tried to be good but not happening. Gained 40 pounds..The doctor said he could put the band back in and he did December 2014. Since then, I have gained another 20 pounds. I have had 3 adjustments and one "super fill"..well, you wouldn't know it. I can (and do) eat anything I want and a lot of it. I feel like a PIG. My clothes are too tight and I am miserable. I wonder if I even have a band in place. now to top it off I have developed "mystery pains". joints, muscles, back and even my hands.. I wonder if my body is saying get this "alien baby" out of me. The doctor had talked about RNY but I was scared and I had enjoyed such success with the band I never gave it a thought. DUMB I should have listened to my inner self. My insurance would not approve a sleeve. Well, here I am, 7 months post-op and miserable. I don't know where to turn. If they take the band out, I know my insurance would never approve RNY now. I am not sure another fill is the answer either. If I do have a band in the correct place. too tight would mean another slip and I sure don't want to go through that again. Anyone out there had this issue and what did you do about it. I am 63 years old..5'2" presently 211 pounds. I used to walk daily and completed a 15K this past February (9.3 miles). Today, all I do is SIT. I tried to walk today and went about a mile. Now I am in pain again. This is nuts. I was in excellent health just a few months ago. What is going on? I have had blood work, but no answers there. I don't know if they are looking in the right place. Please give me your 2 cents. I have always trusted this site to give me good advice and I really need it now.

Thanks: Short and Chunky (Melinda in Florida)

@@Short and Chunky I'm so sorry to hear about the slip and all that you are going through. I would want to know that the band is in the right place and working properly. Can you schedule a floro or barium swallow with your Dr? Then you can see along with the Dr. how quickly or slowly things are moving through the band and maybe adjust properly from there.

I know there are several on here who have had their bands replaced with new bands, and I hope they will come out to give their experience and advice. All I can say is that I know since I had to have my band unfilled due to a dilation and then went back for fills I haven't felt the same, and weight loss is really non existent for me. I haven't gained but I am not losing either....I feel like I am at a stalemate right now.

when my band slipped and I was unfilled I was able to get the band back to correct place. my problem was that my esophagus couldn't handle my pouch. once my pouch even got a little full my esophagus spasmed. my doctor tried to give me little fills but in a 14 cc band I was only able to fill to 5 cc. so no restriction. he refuses to try again. his reason is that my problem will always be present and could cause permanent damage. on Friday I am going in for a bypass. I need to lose enough wt. to get both of my knees replaced so its really important.

Thanks guys for your posts. I felt so alone in this. Lisa I will ask for a barium swallow. I have had them before and they do say so much. Frustration is such an awful thing and it only leads to more issues. I hope to see the doctor within the next few days to get some answers and get back in the saddle once again. I want the old, skinnier, healthier me back. I felt so much better - but I also know that I have to dig deep and find my old "will power" too...that appears to have taken quite a beating. I'll keep you all posted on what he says. Thanks again for the support - you all know what it means!

I don't mind. about a month before I found out I had begun suffering from reflux. I told my surgeon and pcp. they increased medications for reflux and I took measures like not eating after a certain time and sleeping upright. on the 4th of july at a party I started to have severe chest pain. I could actually see my heart beat or I thought it was my heart beat right through my shirt. I went home and took my blood pressure and pulse and all was normal. so on the first day after the holiday I went to the surgeon who ordered a barium swallow. in the pictures it showed over 20 esophageal spasms. I didn't even have any pain at that time so I can only imagine what the one that caused pain and was throbbing looked like. so the symptoms are reflux, sliming and pbing all foods, pain and I mean severe pain . they unfilled my band and slowly over 6 weeks my diet changed from liquid to full liquid mushy and than regular. although the band went back into place it was just a small slip my esophagus still showed distention, and elongated and spasms. tried to do fills but the reflux was immediate as were pbing all the foods. hope I answered your question. and I don't blame my band. I blame the pa for not ordering a swallow when after a year I had suddenly got reflux and pbing. this is my message to all concern. be a advocate for yourself and your band. always demand a endoscopy or barium swallow when things start going wrong.

Terrydumont - that sounds awful. So sorry for that experience. I know the pain you are talking about and how scared you were. A slip is no joke and something that should be dealt with ASAP. You may not die, but boy do you think you will. The doctor told me that I could have actually "killed" my stomach with the restricted blood flow. So glad you are doing better. I didn't blame by band either and I don't blame it now, I think this is a case of the doctor not "listening" to the patient and/or the patient not being totally clear as to a situation.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
