Pain sensitivity...

Recommended Posts

So I'm always cold since surgery. That I am dealing with by buying every hoodie and sweater I can find. The other thing I noticed is little things like bumping my toe or scratching myself is painful. I'm not talking a minute or so, it can be a whole day. I burned myself putting something in the oven one day and it hurt for 3 days. It didn't even leave a mark that is how minor it was. I'm worried it's more but I don't even know how to approach this or with who. I know the rheumatology dr that I was referred to for having inflammatory markers blew it off as nothing, but I keep worrying there is more. Anyone else experiencing this?

I tolerate temperature (heat) better, but haven't complained I'm cold (yet). Haven't noticed any other hyper sensitivity.

It is very common for people who have lost a lot of weight to be sensitive to cold. Before the weight loss, the body fat acted as an insulator. Before surgery, I would often drive with the car windows open even in the winter because I liked the fresh air. Now I feel the cold. When I go out in the winter and shovel the snow off my driveway, I need to use hand warmers inside my gloves to keep my fingers from freezing.

There is a condition associated with surgery as a result of the anesthesia not working quite right where the body actually felt all the pain of surgery, but being sedated you are unaware that your body felt the pain.(if that makes any sense). So basically the body gets traumatized by the surgery and becomes hyper sensitive to any source of pain. It can last anywhere from a few weeks to years after an incident. I wish I could remember what it was called, but I had a similar thing happen to me after surgery and it took 6 months before something like a simple paper cut didn't end in over exaggerated pain.

I'm looking it up. Thanks.

I always get a little sensitive after surgery ... minor things hurt like a biarch for a month or two. I think all your emotions are a bit heightened after as well. And I was absolutely freezing all the time post op, although mine was at the start of May, so the end of autumn (fall) here. That first winter was awful ... I had to invest in thermal underwear!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
