First BM after surgery?

Recommended Posts

So when did you all have your first poop after surgery? I'm 4 days post-op and still haven't pooped. I don't really feel bad it's just...I was a daily pooper before ;)

After a week, my surgeon had me take Miralax. It took 3 days and an enema from there. Please don't get to that point.

I was constipated during the pre-op diet so i never went before surgery.......big mistake cuz by day 3 after surgery i was like ok somethings gotta give and putting pressure on that stomach was NOT fun espec when pain meds make you constipated too. sorry tmi, but I just had to make myself go, not fun but neccesary.

@@rora - I don't go everyday so I didn't worry to much for a couple of days. when I did it was "different" without TMI - loose & very dark. I have since had trouble because of the Iron supplements I was taking. Search "pineapple" here and it explains what it felt like :o

Needless to say RN said to stop Iron supplements until I get new BW done in about 3 weeks. I see doctor for 2nd f/u appointment on 9/8. She said if my iron is low we will address it then. I still have some issues but I add miralax to my drink or yogurt about every day (sometimes I forget) and I haven't had "pineapple" issues.

Disclaimer, I am only 10 days post OP

I had my first BM post OP last Friday (surgery was Monday)

I was not uncomfortable before it happened and the first one was loose. Since then I've varied from borderline constipated, to very constipated, but I'm still able to go. I'm going roughly every other day. Had my post OP today and they said what I was experiencing was normal

I haven't taken any laxatives or softeners yet. I do have mirilax and have taken it in the past after surgeries and will use it again if the need presents

Luckily I have been popping since I came home Sunday (surgery was Friday).

Good luck!

I'm not too worried because I simply haven't eaten anything...nothing in, nothing out. And yeah, liquid diets mean soft stools.

I vomited up a lot of blue dye in recovery, and wee was a lovely shade of green. The black poo is just more of the blue dye I expect. Benefibre in the shakes, and alpine tea are safe and gentle ways to get things going.

I had surgery VSG friday July 17 and had my first bm Thursday July 23. No additional supplements or anything. It was loose. Went 2 more times Thursday, and went today too Friday July 24.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
