Hi all,

I'm new to here and Tuesday I went under for my gastric sleeve procedure; but once they went in, My liver was too big for the doctor to continue... I do have to admit.. during the 2 week liquid diet before, I did cheat a little bit ( it was over the 4th of July) But I really don't want to have them open me up and say the same thing..

Anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to shrink it QUICKLY?? I have been doing predominently all liquids.. But are getting severe headaches when I don't eat something solid -( I have been doing a mozz string cheese stick and 2.25 oz of trail mix ( Power Up brand Anti-Oxident) And Fair Life White or Choc Milk...

Anyone else had this happen and any suggestions to help me?

Thanks!

Bless your heart! I will freak out if that happens... I am glad they didn't proceed if it was risky, but yuck!

My preop liver shrink diet is low carb, 3 Protein shakes a day. No alcohol.

What's your starting weight if you don't mind me asking? Have you ever been diagnosed with a fatty liver?

I would definitely cut out the fatty foods you are eating. cheese and trail mix aren't the best are full of fat and carbs. Other than the Protein shakes I wouldn't do milk at all. Try 2 shakes a day and one salad of lettuce (romaine or spinach) with olive oil/vinegar dressing or salsa instead of Salad Dressing and a good Protein like chicken breast or a hard boiled egg. In between drink Water until you think you are going to float away. If you aren't already taking a Multivitamin, I would start.

Also try to walk at least 60 minutes a day even if you have to break it up into 15 minute increments.

Hasn't your surgeon given you a liver-shrinking diet to follow?

I would think in this situation, she/he would be advising you to follow a very strict diet of her/his own choosing.

Good luck to you.

I'm having a hard time with my liquid diet too. I'm calling the office tomorrow because I've had massive headaches that had me most bedridden over the weekend. Today I feel like I could pass out. I feel dizzy and weak. Yes I am keeping hydrated.

Thanks all to the answers and conversation.. I haven't been diagnosed with Fatty liver, But my doctor said that mine is the largest he has come across during his surgeries ( He said it ENORMOUS)... Not something to mess around with ;/ So I am taking the shrinking PRETTY darn serious.... My top weight has been just under 300 (297) I'm at 271 right now.. The diet that they told me to be on is Liquid.. All liquid ( not clear, But I'm sure that's what he will tell me tomorrow..My appt is at 8:30am) Vsgann2014 and Shrinking Peach, I will definitely ask him for a more defined Plan;) I NEED IT... Also, the headaches aren't as bad as Brandeett, but Getting there... That's why I was supplementing the trail mix, mozz and milk.. Otherwise, Mostly all chicken and veggies.. Blended or smoothie-ing everything...We're also Juicing all our veggies twice a day ( about 8-12 oz each time) I'm trying to drink more Water today because I feel stopped up (or harder/muddy-like bowel movements).. Sorry for the TMI all... Rnsleever715, I sure hope that you don't have to go through this when you have surgery... I am going to cut down the cheese and trailmix... I sure appreciate you all being here for me with answers and advice.. and any help from you all is APPRECIATED SINCERELY

My pre-op diet is up to 3 Protein shakes a day (with skim or unsweetened almond milk, or water), low fat broth, sugar-free Jello and 4+ cups (as much as I want) of green leafy veggies (INCLUDING: lettuce, spinach, kale, cabbage, cucumber, celery, tomatoes, onion and garlic, you may have them raw or steamed (no oil, butter, dressings or sauces).

It also specifies (and this is cut and pasted):

  • Do not eat any type of carbs, fats nor oils. Carbs include FRUITS, flour and sugars.

I don't think you should cut down the cheese and trail mix, I think, if you want the sleeve, you will have to cut it out completely.

You need to drink more Water if you're getting headaches. Use dasani drops for flavor if you don't like water. If it's a full liquid and Protein Shake diet don't eat anything! Follow it strictly!

I also did mine over the 4th of July so u can do this!!!

I had a fatty liver pre op. My surgeon puts his patients on a strict liquid diet only either one or two weeks prior to surgery to help with the liver shrinking. He told me to do one week, but I was so scared my liver wouldn't shrink enough that I did two weeks instead.

I can imagine how hard that was for you to have to not have your surgery due to your liver.

Like others have suggested I would talk with your doctor. If he is wanting liquids only then, as hard as it is, I would suggest doing only liquids- without any cheating at all. It is very difficult, but you can do it. Just try to focus on the end result and how great you will feel in the long run.

Good luck to you ????

My pre-op diet is up to 4 Protein Shakes a day, the rest Clear Liquids. sugar free Jello, sugar free Popsicles, chicken, beef, or vegetable broths, zero calorie sugar free beverages, and 1 cup of V-8 juice if wanted. No solids at all, no cream Soups or milks. I'm on the 3 rd day and I've learned to save the v-8 for the evenings when I am the hungriest. It smells and tastes sooooo good.

Don't juice your veggies, especially if you are getting a little constipated. Juicing gives you too much fruit sugar and almost no Fiber. If you must drink your veg, then try blending in a nutrabullet type product instead.

Thank you all, My surgeon has told me that I need to keep the liquid diet up and ONLY if the headaches are BAD do the milk, cheese, and trail mix. He also informed me that for my height and build that my Liver being as big as it is was such a surprise ( He has done over 400 surgeries and RARELY is surprised) I appreciate anyone's meal plans suggestions;) Also I am taking something my Chiropractor suggested ( it's 3 servings of veggies in a pill.. Brand is Standard Process "Cruciferous Complete for liver functionability ) I will add eating the veggies steamed with the juicing.. I feel a heck of a lot better HEALTH wise since I have been juicing.... Also, My dietician said she'd email me some recipes for smoothies and other broth type meals;) Also, going to stock up on the V8 thanks to @Cat268.. Really, THANKS!! Keep posting you meals for me please and any supplements you are all taking.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
