Hey everyone! My name is Amy and I had been thinking for quite some time about WLS. After many failed attempts of trying to do it on my own I finally decided to talk to my PCP about it. I met with her on Wednesday and she sent in the referral in no time! Today, Thursday the bariatric clinic called me and sent me a nice stack of questionnaires. I am in the Bay Area and on Medi-cal. Just looking for some friendly support on this journey! (:

Welcome, Amy! You have definitely found the right place for the support you are seeking. I too came here when I was first considering surgery, and now mine is less than two weeks away. I can tell you that the excitement you are feeling now never goes away, and it will help you through the process. Feel free to ask a lot of questions. There are always people around to help you out! Good luck!

I'm in Daly City and I'm doing mine at Stanford. That's so awesome! I can't wait for my orientation.

@@amyallthetime hi! Welcome to forum! My biggest suggestion is read all you can and ask anyone you know who has had surgery all about it from a personal experience and just really get comfortable with the idea. I looked into bypass surgery in my 20's but it wasn't the time for me yet. I still thought I could do it on my own, but now I'm 38 and I haven't successfully done it on my own and added about another 100lbs to deal with, so it's finally time for me. :)

Hi, I live in NWI and am going to the seminar tomorrow (Monday). I am totally anxious, nervous, excited and worried that something won't work out for me. I am totally ready for this and it's consuming me. I've called the insurance already, have a friend who just had this done and she looks AMAZING. I want to be healthy and thin again. After so many failed attempts I am ready! I cannot wait for tomorrow! Please pray for me that my time will come too ????. All of your comments are so inspiring that I am glad I found this site.

I hope your seminar went well! I submitted my initial questionnaire to the surgeon and now I guess I just wait to hear from them to see if I am a candidate!

@@Anxious2beme Sending you all the best! I will keep my fingers crossed for you as well! I hope it all works out! I didn't ask. I am too nervous to ask. I figured I'd give it a couple of days and then contact them for any updates.

Hi ladies! Seminar was good, but I learned the info I already knew since my friend had this and I have been researching. Still don't know if I'm a candidate but they did give us a packet to complete and to call the MDs office tomorrow to make an appt if interested. I am a bmi of 35-36 and was told that during the waiting period you cannot fall below the 35 bmi or you won't qualify. Also, my other question is what happens with us folks have insurance plans through our employer? Open enrollment will be coming and won't know what insurance we have until November nor the benefits. Anyone explain what they have done in this situation?

@@pinkie D...I love the new name!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
