5 days post op...help Sleevers!

Recommended Posts

Hi Sleevers,

I have a question for you. I know I'm still very fresh off this surgery but I'm starting to get discouraged because the pains in my belly and acid reflux isn't subsiding as fast as I've heard other people experienced. I'm taking my meds, resting, and walking but when I think I'm getting better it quickly tells me, no! How long did it take you all to feel completely healed? Do you have any words of wisdom? Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks guys!!

I'm at 9 days out and my stomach is still tender and it's hard to bend over. :( I had an easier time with csections than I have with this surgery.

Everyone heals differently, so hard to tell. I didn't have any issues but I have heard of some having continual issues after surgery. For most it seems to be around the 4-6 week mark when significant improvement happens. Hang in there and it WILL get better every day until you suddenly look around and it is all better. This too will pass, Good luck!!

Patience, Grasshopper.

You just had 85% of your stomach taken out of your body, and the other half stapled closed. It takes time to feel somewhat normal. I think I finally felt somewhat human again at around 5 weeks. Unfortunately, I still suffer from reflux.

Not gonna lie, the first month sucks. But months down the road, when you feel good and have lost some weight, it's all going to be a distant memory. I promise :)

My pain subsided significantly about every 2 days. My pain was nearly gone in a week or just over a week I'd say. I am at about 3.5 weeks and finally starting to feel "normal". Hang in there, it gets better with each passing day. I cried several times in the beginning out of frustration and went through the "I made a huge mistake" phase. But now, I am feeling good and totally thankful I've done this!

I know I need to take it a day at a time. Thank you for responding! I was curious to know what others went through.

9 days post op feeling great. My incisions itch like crazy. I have a feeling this is a good thing and it means that are healing but home its temporary. Anyone else itchy?

Feel very lucky I stayed 2 days at hospital was nauseated and vomiting when I woke up from surgery. I was up and walking. Came home off meds right away walked at home. Restless feeling well enough to go to the movie day 4. Went to work 2 days (day5) after arriving home. Secretary position didn't over exert. But got tired late in day. Just rested and didn't work as long next 3 days. Trying to remain active and out of bed. Resting when needed but not bed ridden. Healing process seems to be going faster.

I'm just starting week 6 and I'm just starting to feel normal again. My biggest incision is still somewhat sore and I'm still feeling some tiredness but I can pretty much eat everything and I'm not wanting to sleep all day long.

Hang in there - this is major surgery and it will get better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
