My doctor told me it was ok to use whatever means necessary to stay regular, but I was afraid of becoming dependent on laxatives and suffered severely for months. I finally got it that he must know more than me and it would be ok to take his advice. So far, I have had no ill effects from daily stool softeners and regular (not quite daily) use of laxatives. I do alternate the different preparations: Mira-Lax, Col-Rite, Milk of Magnesia, Smooth Move tea. I am so much more comfortable now!

Also, about the grapefruit. I am below my goal weight and I have now increased my fruit intake. (I was already eating plenty of vegetables.) This is probably part of the reason I have been more comfortable. But I would advise being careful not to add a lot of fruit too early. It will definitely affect the rate of weight loss.

What other fruits and veg are you eating besides grapefruit. Dark green leafy veg, bananas (be careful they are high in sugar/carbs), prunes are also good for moving bowels. I'm vegetarian so I've been eating fruit and veg since week 1 with no ill effects. I make it a point to have either green veg or fruit each day. I have a BM anywhere from 1 -3 times a day. I am one of the people who drinking coffee also aids in making me go.

I would start with something simple like eating 1 or 2 prunes before bed. That might help you have a regular BM by morning. If that doesn't work then try some of the other things like Smooth Move tea, MOM, stool softeners or ducolax.

I take a psyllium Fiber pill twice a day, and have some lo-cal hot chocolate with Miralax every other day. I also take a probiotic every day. Together they keep me ship-shape. (Or something that sounds like that.) B)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
