Bruising and Swelling following surgery

DH had his surgery yesterday and was discharged today. The nurse said some swelling and bruising is normal. My question is how much did you swell? Was it just at the incision site(s) which made you look lumpy? Also how long did it take to go away?

BTW, We're not concerned/worried about his swelling, just wanted to hear about others experiences. Thanks!
