What to expect for pre-op appointment?

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow I have my pre op appointment, and I was just wondering what to expect. Thanks! ????

I think it depends on your doctor/hospital. I had blood drawn for about 30 different tests, an EKG, and a barium swallow so they could x-ray my stomach and esophagus.

I'm sure it'll be different for everyone, but I had mine yesterday and found it to be quite helpful.

Mine consisted of a meeting with the dietitian to go over my pre-op prep foods/shakes, post-op product, and the rules about no straws, etc. Then a meeting with the exercise physiologist saying which activities to avoid for the first 4 weeks. Then a very detailed meeting with the PA where I had a few last tests (bloodwork, EKG, etc) and a very thorough overview of what to expect on surgery day.

I think most others going through my surgeon's program have it broken up into 2 separate visits, but because I got bumped up and only have a week until surgery, they put everything on one day, and I was there for about 4 hours.

Oh okay thank you for sharing. @@her1981 I had the barium test done a while back too...Soooo not fun. I called my surgeons office and they told me blood work, meet with the anastheologist (sp?), and they are gonna give me a run down for their end of the surgery. I'm anxious and excited.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
