Worried about dumping syndrome with gastric bypass....advice...thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I suffer from acid reflux. Everything I have read and my doctors suggest that bypass is the best option for me.

Acid reflux is usually the culprit that changes people from the sleeve to bypass. I know I was one of those and thank goodness I went that route. First, I have never had a single bout of reflux or Gerd since surgery.

Second, I have seen so many people that end up taking the chance of going with band or sleeve and end up having to have a revision.

The sleeve can cause people who have never had reflux to get it. I am glad my bariatric team educated my fully on this.

I wanted to do this only once.

I went bypass over sleeve for one major reason: Bypass has better control over diabetes. In most it causes complete remission, immediately, and my diabetes was getting worse every year even with good control. The day after surgery I went from five diabetes meds to none, but added one back after a few weeks. I fully expect to be diabetes free when the weight is gone.

I went bypass over sleeve for two lesser but important reasons. First, long term sustaining of weight loss is better. Second, due to the rerouting of the small intestine the surgery gives two ways to keep the weight off -- restriction and malabsorb factors

There are a number of people in my local support group who have had the sleeve and are happy with it, so it could be the right thing for you.

Thank you all for sharing your reasons and stories. I'm still leaning towards the sleeve, tho you all make some valid points.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
