I have completed all of my pre-requirements for the insurance and am now waiting for approval. I am expecting to have surgery next month. I am on the lower end of the BMI scale but have some co-morbities which qualify me for the surgery. I'm sure my concerns are the same as everyone else having WLS, but did any of you worry about getting back into your old habits? My weakness is sugar ... sweets specifically. I know bypass is extremely restrictive so I won't eat as much, and I've heard about the dumping. But I've also heard that some don't have any problem with sugar intake. I'm scared that I'll be one of those people. Is it really just a mind over matter situation? I can deal with the Protein shakes and I don't typically eat large amounts of food now ... it's just the carb/sugar intake is my downfall. In other words, it's what I eat not how much I eat in my case. I'm scared that I'm still going to have that problem.

I appreciate any advice on how anyone else has dealt with that. I have attended all the nutrition classes and spoke with the doctor, but I want "real world" opinions. :) Thank in advance!

Hi there!

I am one of those folks that does not have any dumping issues with sugar at all. I can eat whatever I want and I don't get sick from it.

It does mean that I have to be more diligent in what I eat. I do have days when I eat things I am not supposed to but I try very hard to simply try a bite or two and then go right back to eating the way I should.

The good news is, the pre op diet and post op diet pretty much strips you of your sugar addiction because you really don't touch it for a long time. If you can get your head around the fact that you cannot have it, you can break that habit. You crave what you eat the most.

Once you have something sweet for the first time, it tastes terrible anyway. Use that to refrain from eating sugar in the future.

You can do it!

I used to be a huge sweets person. I'm 2 weeks post op and haven't had a craving for anything but Protein. I think the pre op diet really helped!

Both of you have mentioned the pre-op diet but my dr is not requiring that of me because he does not want my BMI to drop below the insurance requirement. I have been trying to cut back on the sugar on my own though and will be on the strict post op diet. Hopefully that will help. Thanks for your feedback!

Well, then the post op diet will help because sugar will not be on it and it will be sometime before you can add sugar back into your diet.

You can do this! It is kind over matter and the surgery will help you get there!

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
