Preparations for after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I will be having my surgery June 2, and am thinking of things I can do now that will make the days and weeks following surgery easier for me and my family. What are some good things to do prior to surgery??

I just got my approval today from insurance. I'm probably looking at a mid July surgery date. My head is spinning now about what I need to get done between now and then, so I'm interested in the suggestions from the more experienced people on this board, too!

I am going to have surgery Mid July also. I would also like to know what needs to be done or gotten together for afterwards!

I had quite a long time to prepare so I went on a bit of a shopping spree gradually picking up things I thought I could use. I also happen to love buying things like pretty dishes.

Some of the things I bought that I found useful or plan to use in the near future:

Heating pad

Biotene

Chapstick

(Above for hospital and post-op)

Adult liquid Tylenol

Appetizer spoons (some people like toddler dishes, etc. - I prefer adult things that happen to be small)

Sushi dishes

Saki cups

Small rice bowls (I use these all the time) - 9 oz so comfortably holds 1/2 -3/4 cup yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

Glass 1/2 cup containers (with lids)

Plastic 1/2 cup ziplock containers (with lids)

A Soup mug (I had a pretty pottery one already)

A food scale

Good measuring cups/spoons (if you don't have already)

samples of a variety of Protein shakes/powders

Blender (if you don't have one -- I don't use it much)

Good Water bottle(s)

shaker bottle for mixing shakes

Vitamins

The big thing is to find a Protein Powder you like. The only one I can stand is Isopure. As much as I liked it before- I am already sick of Protein Shakes and I have only been on them 3 days. Make sure all the liquids and broth and Jello are purchased before surgery. I bought 1 oz tupperware containers on Amazon in order to take my lunch to work. Your Dr should give you all your prescriptions at your pre-op appt so they can be filled and ready. One thing I didn't think of was sleeping. One of my muscles was so bruised that laying down in bed was painful. So here I am in the recliner!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
