anyone here over 50?

Recommended Posts

I was banded in Mexico, because I was self-pay. I have a follow up doctor upin Superior, WI., about an hour and a half from me. I am very glad Ihad the band. Iwas on a two week liquid preop diet. Started at 324. Went into surgery at 309, and am now down to 298. My first fill is scheduled for July 18.

I was really surprised at how small the incisions are. Still have a little soreness in the middle, but nothing bad. Currently trying out different things to eat. Sometimes certain foods don't work yet, and I guess I'm pushing some things too soon, but I figure I shouldn't be trying that stuff yet anyway.

Just wanted to let you know, I feel it was well worth it.

Hi all. I am 58 very soon to be 59. I had the lap band on 4/9/07. My bigest is ..I am ashamed to said.. was 358. I started a diet 2 yrs ago and lost 50 lbs. But could not stay on it, so I gained back 20 lbs. Then I heard of the lap band and asked my ins. company if they would pay for it. They made me diet for 6 months, I lost down to 303 on the day of my lan band. I have lost down to 284 but I am not restricted and can eat anything. So as of last Wednesday I am pigging out. I feel like crying!

I will be banded a yr. next mo. and I've lost 100 lbs. You are never too old for this surgery if it gives you a new lease on life..which it did for me.

djhickm: why don't you go for a fill. If you can pig out, you are far too loose. Also, pigging out once is not the end of the world. The band is only a tool to help you keep your eating in check. You will have your days where you could have done better. Don't give up just resolve not to do it again anytime soon. Doddie

You are not a wet blanket. All of us at one time or the other have experienced the pain of slipping back into old habits. That is why the websites are so special. We are not judgmental just want to help and support.

I have trouble where I live finding someone to give me a fill. I have to fly 3000 miles at a cost of $1,000.00 so I too have my down days. I am far too loose but money doens't grow on trees so I have to make do with my 3 ccs until I can fly out again. My weigh is very slow in cominf off. Doddie

djhickm: You are posting messages. There is such a thing as a live chat room but you will need someone to chat to on the other end. You can sign on and "talk" to someone instantly as they respond instantly. With posts, I can post, log off and you will still get my message. Chat room are like you and I sitting in a livingroom chatting only we type.

Take a look at the top border and you will see "chat". Click on that and see where it takes you. Doddie

Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I have been visiting the site for months since I began my journey last fall. I am due to be banded on July 16. I have my last visit with my doctor on June 26 and then start the pre op diet on July 2. By the way, I forgot to mention that I am 59. I have been overweight all my life and have several co-morbidites. I want to take charge of my life again before I turn the big 60. I know that it will be a long journey since I have over 100 lbs to lose. I am looking forward to this new chapter of my life and have a very supportive family. I find this site extremely helpful and eveyone is so supportive. Their positive attitudes and encouragement has been very comforting for this "old fart". I will defnitely check out the "over 50" thread. Best wishes to everyone who is taking this journey.

Good for you! I moved to Arizona after 50 years in the Seattle area, I miss it! Keep us posted on your progress. This site was a great help to me especially right after surgery for all of those little concerns. Don't be afraid to ask any question the people on here are so supportive. Take care!
Hi: I am 63 coming up 64 in August and was banded Feb. 01/07 and wished I had done it sooner. I was 303 when I was on pre op had the surbery at 288 and now am at 269. I thought I was the oldest fart (and believe me you do just that) until I talked to a lady 77 years young. Proves nothing is too late. Doddie

Welcome Darlaur Devera & Doddie - I am going to call you the 3 D's..

I got my date 7/17 - Had my shrink visit this a.m. - she thought i was ok for surgery (fooled her:rolleyes),,,

I am really excited and cant wait.. But i am still looking forward to my last 10 suppers :hungry:. Had pizza tonite (grandkids came over to swim so got them something they would like. and oh yea i jogged in the pool for about 40 minutes), I want white gravy over rice really back - so am going to have to fry up some chicken or pork chops and make some this weekend.. I eat this kind of food about once a year - but knowing that i have sugery and Protein diet for a long time to come (don't think i get food until about 6 weeks post op) I want it now ...

I agree you need a fill.. It's one day at a time we "Know" that the band isn't the magic pill we all want "but i think we wish that it was"

We are still going to have struggles - but look at thin people they still eat cakes pies etc but they just don't do it all day and every day - on piece and that's it...

Count me in too! I'm 53, and will be 54 on August 4th, so I'd love to have my surgery scheduled around that date. What a great Birthday present that would be. My surgeon's admin. ass't. is waiting for the psych report ( he passed me, they just need the report for my file ) then I go in for my appt. with the APRN who schedules the surgery.

So, for now it's just a waiting game, but I am so excited I could spit.

And for particulars: Age: 53 Weight: 238 Height 5'2" - with, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Pre-diabetic, GERD, Barretts Esophagus, Enlarged liver, Stress Incontinence and to top it all off, they can't prove my sleep apnea because I've never been in REM sleep either of the two sleep studies I did, but I am nighttime hypoxic, so I have a real noisy compressor and sleep with 2L of oxygen. Oh, and I have a hang nail.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
