Pain at stomach's "exit" incision

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week post-op, and have a bad pain at the place on my abdomen, where the stomach was pulled thru. It is especially painful to get up from a seated position. Also, when walking, gravity really makes it worse. Just wondering how long this will last? Anyone remember having this? Would like to stop pain meds, but can't tolerate the pain without them.

My pain in that area lingered for a few weeks. If I can remember correctly it just magically disappeared at the end of two weeks. Hang in there and congrats on your surgery!!

It'll pass. Remember, they really stretched and pulled that puppy when they removed the stomach. Try a low heat setting on a heating pad, Use a towel between you and the pad. If it is too warm, turn the heating pad on (off of you), then once it is warm, turn it off, then let it cool a bit before you put it on the towel, then on you. This should help. It DOES pass quickly. Good luck to you!

Im three days out from surgery and the pain on my right side is the worst. Doc said I willl be sore at the exit site for a while. I can relate to your comments Zoeybear. Gravity, changing positions, and sitting up. I am definitely looking forward to less pain. Im not concerned, just impatient.

Thanks, everyone. Feels good knowing I'm not alone in this AND not just a baby!!! I, too, am not a very patient person, Fireflea! I'm ready to get on with my wonderful new life without anything standing in my way!!! Glad for this forum to connect with people who know exactly what I'm talking about! Good luck, everyone!

Holy Cow! I am almost 2 weeks out and I have the same problem with pain. I found that wearing something supportive helps as well as using a heating pad. When I get up and walk around, I sometimes hold a pillow tightly against that area to keep from having aching pains. If I am on my feet too long, I start swelling in that area and sometimes have spasms. I can't wait for this pain to end!

Oh i remember. Mine hurt for about two weeks. I called my docs office. I was told that that site is also where they cut thru the abdominal wall and takes longer to heal. I liked ice instead of heat. And i kept a pillow against it when rising. You'll find one day it hurts less then boom one morning it won't hurt at all. But still be careful.

Mine lasted over 3 weeks, but I overdid it by doing some closet purging just under 3 weeks out -- all that twisting aggravated the sore muscles and made it much worse. So don't do what I did!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
