Anyone have trouble with med absorbtion?

Recommended Posts

I take a certain brand of ADD med, and have been taking for 13 years now. Never had an issue, until after surgery. It doesn't work anymore! I though sleeve didn't affect the whole absorption deal...anyone have any ideas? I've tried chewing those little buggers for mucosal absorbtion, but it's too icky and doesn't last.

It might be that they are flushing out too fast. Ask the Dr. that prescribed them for an alternative, and be diligent about paying attention to how the new ones are working. Also, talk with your surgeon about this - very important - to get both doctors on board about any changes, so they can commiserate and find the best solution for you. And don't wait too long, you don't want to suffer any ill-effects from not getting the proper dosage. Good luck to you!

I had that problem with absorption of medication. We (my PCP, my pharmacist, and myself) had a sit down together to try and figure out why. I had also begun to break apart my meds and I still wasn't absorbing them. They couldn't understand what was happening and why my medicines weren't having the desired effect. So I (being a nurse) went to the medical journals to see if this was an issue. I found several articles about this happening. After telling them, they did some research and found out that some meds will just not have time to break down in the stomach before passing through. The pharmacist specifically noted that "coated" and time release medication is designed to start breaking down with stomach acids and takes quite a while for the process to happen. He said they don't sit in our stomachs long enough for that to happen. Capsules and easily broken down meds are usually not a problem. Also meds that are meant to be absorbed in the intestines are acceptable. He told me that any meds prescribed need to be chewable, liquid, non coated, or made to absorb in intestines from now on.

I hope this helps. It took us a while but we got it all straight and now they both know for future patients!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
