I can't believe nobody told you that after surgery up until the time they give you the okay YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY NOT DEVIATE FROM the list of foods OR liquids they tell you to eat. Every time I had an appointment I also met with a nutritionist who gave me a new list of things to eat/ drink. I cant believe they didn't do that for you. Two weeks after I had mostly liquids yet an some items had to come from their stores. Soup mixes, shake mixes an everything tasted awful. I am at 9 weeks an still on 1/4-1/2 cup servings of soft foods on their list. If you even take a taste of anything else you probably will throw it up even after two hours. An that hurts. So above all follow exactly the diet they give you. If they didn't then ask for one. There aRe foods you will NEVER be able to eat. An one is probably fast food. I can't even eat fruits nor vegetables yet. One serving of food isn't much but it has to be all Protein so we get the 60 grams protein. Then when the time comes, if it ever does, then we might be able to add them. Hopefully. They didn't tell us a LOT of things pro op.

This response is quite harsh, I think she was just trying to give warning to others that are like her. Not every doctor and nutritionist works like you and hands you a printed out list. My surgeon I was on pursers food before I was allowed to be discharged. A month out and I was cleared for everything so that is not the case. I've also have zero issues with eating anything I've tried. Personally I think the longer you stay away from something the more reason your body has to reject it. Just because your surgeon has one set of rules does not mean that another surgeons are wrong please keep that in mind. You're coming off quite rude in my opinion and not helpful just yelling at her like you would a child.

I think eventually you will be able to eat watermelon. I was sleeved nine months ago and can eat fruit. I also eat vegetables and some carbs. My diet plan says to eat at least sixty grams of carbs and less than 140 grams of carb.. Also sixty grams of Protein or more. I haven't lost weight quickly with this ,but steadily. So I have lost a total of eighty seven pounds in the past year. Fifty seven pounds in the last nine months.

I agree some of the previous responses were too harsh. In the future hopefully you will be able to add the watermelon. Your body could have also been quite thirsty and watermelon has a high Water content. I actually experience some dumping with certain fruits but for the most part handle them very well. I am almost one year post-op. I reached my surgeons goal a while ago and am working on reaching a lower BMI and increasing muscle mass. Previously I saw that someone had said no carbs and no sugar ever. Incorrect. Our bodies need carbs and sugar for brain function and energy etc. We simply have to be quite a bit more restrictive with them. Also, as far as not being able to have pastries and such. Guess what? I make my own. Yep...they are many bariatric friendly recipes and I have been coming up with my own as well. I make delicious flourless breads and muffins which my family loves. You can absolutely live deliciously but it does require a bit of research and experimentation in the kitchen. People always apologize and say "oh I'm sorry you can't have that can you," pitying me. So, when the family gets together I make bariatric friendly dishes and don't tell them until after...lol. Yesterday I made an apple crisp (no sugar except what is in the fruit) and I made a buffalo chicken dip with Greek yogurt and reduced fat/calorie cheese with quinoa chips which have 8g of Protein per serving plus all of the Protein in chicken, cheese, and Greek yogurt. I told them after they ate it all up, as well as a little for myself, it was "bariatric friendly" and they were shocked. Don't pity me people of the world I can still eat yummy foods...lol...but that is the stigma that comes with the surgery.

My guidelines are also very strict. In my classes we had forever do's and forever don'ts concerning food and behavior. We never had to buy any shakes or foods from the University's Hospital I went to (personally I think it's a way to take advantage and make a chunk of change from patients) but in order to think the best of people it could also be because they care about what you ingest those first few weeks. Like it was mentioned before guidelines vary from program to program. Even from the most prestigious of places. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I think we can all agree we want the best for each other and want all to succeed. Sometimes we just don't put it as delicately as we should. But such is our dealings with the outside world as well. Don't let it scare you away please continue to share and contribute your triumphs and struggles. ????

I'm pretty sure it was the little piece that went down & did that. Hopefully your sleeve doesn't have dumping from a bit of juice. I take those warnings as a little slap on the hand and thank God for them...or I might have jumped on that Little Ceasers Hot n Ready Bacon Crust pizza they played OVER & OVER during my extended recovery! ;) like others said just take it slow. Lord knows I've licked more things in the last 2 months than I've ever licked in my whole life. (Dill pickle chips are my licking weakness) just take that pain as a Learning experience as it sounds like you have. You'll do great! Chin up :)

It should be clear for anyone who reads this forum that there is no 'one size fits' all result. In my case, there was little pain, I was able to drink with no problems immediately after surgery, and at 10 days post-op, I am able to consume soft foods with no problems. Heck, I am even able to eat shellfish (shrimp) only 10 days post-op. Most of this is result of my sleeve doc, who I believe to be one of the best on the planet.

One sleever on a YouTube video shared a GREAT approach on post-op feeding ... which was simply this: When ever you consume a 'new food', take one bite and then wait 10 minutes. See how your body reacts. If its ok, then your good. If you have a negative reaction, stop but come back to that same food (w/ 10 minute test) after a few days.

Everything just takes time ... one day at a time ... one meal at a time ... one bite at a time.

Cheers!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
