Day 4 post op and scared to take big sips

Recommended Posts

i wonder if you need to possibly try drinking room temp or warm Decaf tea. Are you just scared to drink or is it actually painful?

I'm going through same thing right now. Not only fluids but I'm having a hard time with Vitamins and Protein as well

I was told to aim for 1 ounce every 15 minutes. When I broke it up that way, it was a bit easier. But I had a lot of issues swallowing in the first two weeks post op that eventually improved and made it a lot easier.

Don't take big sips. Stay with small sips and go slow. Yes it will take forever, but as you heal you'll be able to take bigger sips. Until then go slow. You will gradually build up to drinking 64 ounces+ of fluids.

As sleevers we should always be taking small sips. If I take one that's too big, it causes me discomfort. Having to always take small sips has been a frustration to me because sometimes I just want a really big DRINK of ice cold water/SF beverage. I had a hard time with getting enough liquids in the beginning; doing better now, but not sure I'm still getting enough even though I don't believe I'm dehydrated.

Always, always do what your surgeon and NUT suggest; that is your best course of action.

Definitely stick with the small sips. I also used a 1 ounce medicine cup which was great. I kept a count of how many cups I drank in the early days so I always knew exactly where I was. The tiny cup is less intimidating and for me, made it much easier to get my totals up. JamieLogical has a great goal listed- try for an ounce every 15 minutes.

Good luck to you.

Thank u all. I unfortunately am really scared to actually drink anything lol bc I hate the idea of discomfort! It's just not getting easier and I just wish I could gulp! Taking it one step at a time!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
