First post - just back home from hospital - now having a harder time drinking

Recommended Posts

Howdy y'all - This is my very first post. Things were so hectic leading up to the surgery, this has been my best opportunity to write!

I was sleeved on the 17th and honestly the two days in the hospital were pretty great (as strange as that sounds). I had no complications, leakage, bleeding, nausea, or even much pain (granted, the pain pump helped a lot). I was ambulatory and walking multiple laps around the floor within 4 hours of being in the room and I walked and took deep breaths and coughed often. The hospital stay was better than some hotel stays I've had, surgery and all. Everything is looking good. I feel very lucky.

I went home today and things are not quite as smooth, however. Soreness has been more prominent, especially at the drain site (which my doctor has me keep until we meet for the 1st post op appt). I have more gas in my chest and elsewhere, but that's more annoying than painful. The more pronounced problem is that I'm having a harder time drinking fluids today than the previous two days. It's not really a problem swallowing, because that feels fine, but when the liquid gets to the top of the new stomach (at least that's what it feels like), it percolates a little before going in. Maybe that's gas or the beginnings of reflux, I don't know, but it's slowing down how much Water or other clear fluids I drink.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal and does it improve?

Thanks,

David

Doesn't sound alarming. I would just sip a little slower and watch it for now.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
