Should I be able to feel my port??

Recommended Posts

Maybe I'm concerned for nothing, but I was banded on June 4 and have never been able to feel anything under the port incision. Perhaps I will feel it after all the swelling goes down. Thanks in advance for any feedback sent my way.

Don't worry. Some people can feel it, others can not. Don't worry it's still there.

I remember about 3 years ago one of our patients called us frantically to say that her port flipped and didn't feel right. She rushed over to the office and said "Here feel this, feel this under my scar on the right side of my belly."

We told her "The port is on the other side :)."

She couldn't tell where the port was.

For some people however it is more noticeable.

Dr. Hekier,

Thanks for the reassurance! I did check all incision sites before I posted in case I was mistaken about which one was the port. My best guess was that the port was the biggest incision, which is the only one feels sore.

I think it's a good thing that you don't feel your port.

1. It means that it's sewn in good and tight.

2. You're swollen and your body just needs to adjust to everything and it sounds like it's doing that well.

3. It's good not to feel your port under your skin now because after you lose those extra inches, you don't want to look like a quarter is trying to pop out from your tummy.

Don't worry, your doc will know where to find it.

Well, after losing 135 lbs, I finally feel mine. But the dr has had no problem finding it for the fills. Guess that's why they do it for us!!

Thank you, Batgirl. Your reply makes so much sense. Speaking of swelling, about how long does it take for the swelling to subside?

The more weight I lose, the more I can feel my port. With that said, I have always been able to tell where it is since I had my surgery. Everything else being equal, this is an individualized situation like so many other things with this band.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
