How do I know when i am full?

Recommended Posts

You may not at first. Liquids don't fill some people up. Drink/eat the recommended amount by your nutritionist and stop. Don't keep searching for that full feeling. Most people will feel some restriction once they move to purees and then to soft foods.

This will take time, so be patient with yourself! Measure your food. You should have been given instructions on how much you should be having, per meal/snack. So get out the kitchen scales and the measuring cups and start weighing/measuring what you are eating. You are really going to have to FEEL your sleeve, when it feels like food is at the top, you are too full. Chew your food thoroughly and very slowly. Do one bite at a time, feel how it sits in your sleeve, then try another... put your fork/spoon down between bites. I started with about 2 ounces of food/liquid. Then over the months I'm at about 4 ounces max (I'm 3 months out now). Remember, you don't want to be full, but you DO wanted to be sated. Full is too much. If you don't have guidelines, call your surgical team and ask them for them. Good luck to you!

The feeling of "full" you once identified with may not be the same feeling again when it returns. Some people hiccup, sneeze, have a stuffy nose, get a buldge-feeling in their chest as their new "full". It will take some time to get used to all (once it is healed and actually working again), but you will get there.

For me i get a stuffy nose, yes strange but that's my new "full".

I just don't want to eat too much Ice cream or Soup and end up throwing up I hate throwing up,

The physical sensation may not come for a few months. Mine is a burp. In these early days just stick the eating the amounts recommended by your nutritionist. For some that's a ¼ cup, others a bit more.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
