Curious..... Why sleeve over bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I've been researching for over a year and thought I knew what I wanted. I turned in all my medical evaluation info and turns out what I wanted (sleeve) is not what is ideal for my situation (I have GERD) . I am totally fine with RNY, My question, for those of you going the sleeve route, why did you choose this over bypass?

Thanks!

I chose it because my intestine was left as it was, nothing was taken off, allowing all the Vitamins and minerals to be absorbed. This translated into not having followup as often to make sure I wasn't developing a Vitamin deficiency.

I choose the sleeve because my DR said it was best and I trusted his decision.

When I talked to my doc, nut and pcp they said it was the best option for me and seem to be the safest route lately when it comes to certain medical conditions. Good luck with your choice. I wanted RNY but was recommended for sleeve since I was already anemic and have other medical issue that would have been interrupted by the lack of Vitamins and nutrients if I did not properly handle my Vitamin intake.

I wanted the sleeve for the same reasons people listed above. I had my mind set to get the sleeve before talking to my surgeon, and I was prepared to argue over which type of surgery to have with him. But it turned out that he was pro Sleeve. He'd been doing Gastric Bypass for 12 years and Sleeve for 5 years. And he was convinced that the Sleeve produced results that were "almost" as good as the Bypass. "Almost" meaning, that his Sleeve patients lost approximately 75% of their excess weight, while his Bypass patients lost approximately 80% of their excess weight.

He told me to realistically expect to get down to 235 from my beginning weight of 375. 2 years later, I'm easily staying in the 205 - 210 lb range. Needless to say, I'm very happy with my Frankensleeve. B)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
