Question for the slow losers

Recommended Posts

At first it drove me insane reading where some people lost so fast. Then I read about the "Honeymoon Stage" and how the fast weight lost is over. I am a slow loser.....if this is the "Honeymoon Stage".....I hate to see what will happen next. I have had to come to the fact that I am older, bad knees and sit all day behind a desk!!! I get in all of my Protein, Water and Vitamins. I went through a period that my thyroid was like a roller coaster ....had 6 week stalls....lose a little and then stall...even started gaining (this drove me insane because I had failed at so many other diets). Went through three different brands of thyroid medication. Seems to leveled out now and I am dropping weight again....slowly, but I did lose what I had gained and then some. I will probably take more than two years to reach anywhere near my goal....but that is OK....I am getting healthier every day.

I was/ am slow loser, I see post of ppl my starting size losing like it was nothing just melting off and me a pound here and a pound there. Than at around 8 months I stopped losing and realized I had lost over a 100lbs and those same ppl who were losing quick were about at the same weight loss as me. According to my doctor during the honeymoon phase our bodies are kinda on auto pilot some will lose fast some will lose slow but at the end of the phase most will be right where their doctor says they will be. My doctor was dead on as to what I would be at 8 months out. I have stalled now but it's my lifestyle, I'm ok with that because I still follow my plan but can't do anything about my job until summer at which time I can focus on my goal.

By the beginning of April I should have lost 60 lbs according to the doctor's estimates. I'm at 45 lbs lost since October. I'm just so over it now. I have 70 lbs to go and I doubt I'll make it anytime soon.

My biggest fear is the "honeymoon" period. If its THIS time of my weight loss that I'm supposed to be losing fast (and I'm this slow) then how slow will it be when its suppose to slow down ??

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the concept of a "honeymoon period" doesn't really apply to us slow losers. Since we're slow and steady the whole way through, maybe our weight loss won't "shut down" as much as someone who loses really quickly in the first 9 months or so? That's what I keep telling myself, anyway, because it's too depressing to think about the alternative!

This thread has been really good. It's like the old saying misery loves company, well in this instance it's slow losers love company, just so we know we are not alone, failing or the odd ball out. I have never lost like this in my entire life. The last time I lost a great deal of weight was in 2001 and it was a little over 90lbs in less than 6 months. I just 'assumed' it would be the same this time if not faster. WELL the scales are sure showing me wrong. In the last four weeks I've lost 4 pounds. It's frustrating, but I keep trying to tell myself this is the 'FOREVER' time not like any of the times that have come before. Every pound gone this time is gone for good. At 65 I just wanted to hurry up and loose it all so I could get on with my life. Now I'm beginning to think it might take me a couple of years to loose it unless something turns around. The good thing I've read is that the slower you loose the less saggy skin you have. Have to keep looking on the bright side my friends.

I just have to say, I just love your posts. Your name says it all. Your posts are always so logical and straight to the point. I also appreciate you and all the other peeps going through the same "slow loser" struggle. Really makes me feel like I'm not alone in this fulfilling but sometimes very frustrating journey. What choice do any of us have but to keep on keepin' on? In my opinion, that just makes us slow losers even more special ;)

I would also like to see a sub forum just for slow losers, just so we can all commiserate without annoying everyone else ;) I know another site I'm on (not as much as this one) has one that's called "Slow Losers Unite!" Anyone else think that would be nice to have our own sub forum?

What do you say, @@Alex Brecher?

I am in the same boat. I have lost weight more quickly than this "on my own" several times in the past. In 6 months post op, I've lost 46.8 pounds. Back in 2010/2011, I lost 49.4 pounds in 6 months. In the summer of 2013, I lost 42.2 pounds in 5 months. And I was eating a LOT more back then. I allowed myself cheat days where I would eat an entire frozen pizza or an entire pint of ice cream. I was having a packet of Oreos as a snack every workday afternoon! I was eating between 1400 and 1700 calories on my non-cheat days.

So it can be frustrating to be only eating 1000 calories a day, working out 5-6 days a week, and losing at a slower pace than I did back then.

@@JamieLogical The way I try to keep my sanity is the realization that this time is different from all the rest. We both lost much faster but boy we gained it back much faster too. This time it may be slower but each pound, in my opinion is gone for good, I won't be regaining it and losing it ten time over like in my past yo-yo days and I assume most of you are the same way.

We're all turtles I guess slow and steady! And I'm only getting on an average of 500 -550 calories a day. I think that may be some of my slowness but at this point I'm just not able to each much more than that. Once I get the go ahead to added Protein powder, shakes or Snacks perhaps I'll be able to up my calorie count.

I still find it utterly fascinating that I'm not hungry most of the time even on so few calories and what small amounts I eat fill me up and satisfy me. My biggest complaint is finding something to eat. Nothing has that zip and zing it used to, sigh, can't have it both ways I guess. I dress my food up with salsa and hot stuff (which thank goodness still doesn't bother me) but ------ well ----- food is kind of boring now.

My surgery was 11/19 and I was a super fast loser. Started my preop liquid diet on 11/14 and lost 10 pounds in the next 5 days leading up to surgery. As a matter of fact, from 11/14 to the end of November I lost over 30 pounds. However, every month since then my loss has dramatically slowed. Here's my total weight lost for each month.

November 31.6

December 15.0

January 14.8

February 9.8

March 0.7

I think a lot of it has to do with my work has changed so I'm more sedentary throughout the day now. I also take in more calories (around 1000). I'm also struggling to keep my carbs down. I don't agree with anyone that says you need to avoid carbs or take in less than 50. I aim for 50 but If I have to I'll get up to 75. I actually see myself stall more when I don't get enough calories & carbs. I do need to cut out artificial sweeteners and sugars.

Anyways, I didn't mean to rant about what I need to do or not do. I just wanted to point out that the previous post about everyone ending up in the same place is probably accurate. Given that I was a rapid loser to start with and I've slowed to a crawl (average daily weight loss last 30 days is 0.34lb/day), I can definitely start to relate with the slow losers. I am going to do everything I can to change this but for now it is what it is.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

    • LeighaTR

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
