Is this pain normal?

Recommended Posts

I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and am healing nicely, but struggling to get all the fluids in. About two days ago after being very active, I was experiencing some very sharp pain in my right hand side, close to the incision site they pulled my stomach out. I spoke to the doctor and he said this is normal, that a lot of stretching was done to get the stomach out of the small incision. Two days later I feel like I have been kicked in the side. There is no bruising of the skin whatsoever and the incisions are healing so well I can barely see them. Is this pain normal? He says yes, its internal bruising. it hurts when I sit and get up and down. Just curious if anyone else out there is experiencing this kind of pain.

Yes. I think sometimes it get a little worse the week or 2 after for some folks as the healing process happens and the nerves come back to life. Mine was not that bad but I think it was a couple months before the big incision had "no" pain. When I had my hysterectomy the insides they shuffled around to get to what they needed hurt way worse than the incision the whole time and I could see the bruising on my belly from where they clamped my skin. That was MUCH worse than my sleeve procedure BTW.

I was sleeved on 2/23 and were in the exact same boat. I started experiencing the pain you're describing on Thursday. It still hurts but has significantly diminished. Hang in there, you're not alone.

Its very normal, my right side hurts more then the left where my stomach is located. And I have a deeper dent on the left where it hurts. Its from all muscle and tissue they have to cut through. I am a 2/23 bypass

I have pain too!

I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow & am experiencing *tremendous* pain in my

largest incision on my right side. It's a stabbing pain & feels like in literally being stabbed over & over. It hurts as bad as it did day one. No redness, discharge or anything to indicate infection, however, there is a lot of swelling. The swelling increases throughout the day, seems to get worse with increasing activity & looks the worst by bedtime. I've continued to use ice packs and take my pain medication around the clock, but it doesn't really seem to touch this incision pain. I can't cough, laugh, sit, stand or even roll over in bed without wincing from the pain. The first 2 days post op in the hospital I was vomiting non stop. It's was miserable throwing up with 5 brand new incisions and a tiny new tummy! I know that definitely caused my abdomen & incisions to hurt more at the time, but I'm not sure if that had caused the pain to last this long. I have my 2 week post op appointment scheduled for this coming Tuesday so I will definitely talk to my doctor then, but in the meantime I figured I'd throw it out to you guys :) any info would be great!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
