Why do we stall?

I think it's a metabolic flexibility thing. I've been reading a lot about that lately, and how men's and women's bodies process and use foods so differently from one another. Reasearch is showing that women are more 'metabolically flexible' than men apparently. Our bodies adjust to new ways of moving and eating, and hang on until the siege is over. Then when we keep staying with our plan, the bod eventually gives in and starts losing again. It's definitely NOT been "calories in-calories out" for me AT ALL! I stalled a whole month at 177 while eating 850 cal per day (no starchy carbs at all!) and plenty of Protein AND running three times a week and hitting the gym lifting 3 times a week. Made me nuts. Now it's starting move move again...slowly. Hang in there. Lots of folks have had good results changing it up a bit with calories or amounts and such.

During my follow up visit, they explained it as your body catching up. Every 3 weeks or so, I've noticed that the scale stopped moving, but the inches kept going. I figured this was a logical explanation. She also said that that's the reason why most cosmetic surgeons won't operate on a WLS patient until they've stopped losing for at least 6 months to give the body a chance to catch up to the weight loss be it losing inches or skin tightening.

Additionally, Water retention can come due to any number of sources - hormonal changes (both TOM for you ladies and and all of us can experience changes from the hormones that have been stored in our fat getting released as we lose weight,) changes in medication or diet (sodium in particular) or changes in our exercise or activity patterns (stressing our muscles requires additional Water for the repair/growth/strengthening process) or moderate dehydration which can cause the body to hoard what fluids it has (keep sip, sip, sipping your water, or drinking normally as things heal!)

Our bodies get used to the changes we make, and our metabolism adapts. It's a normal, if infuriating process.

I completely agree. I've lost 4 lbs (2 of those pounds came off just last week) since January 2nd, but my body has continued to change.

You've gotten a lot of good information, but I wanted to add that it's not just "us" (we) who stall--everyone who is trying to lose weight does. As frustrating as it is, weight loss just doesn't occur in a linear fashion. There are fits and starts, weeks where you lose and lose and lose, weeks where you the scale doesn't budge. That's one reason that I think so many people in WLS-land have learned to focus on NSV's--because even if the weight isn't coming off, there are so many other things you can look at and say, "Wow, this is good!"

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
