anti-depressants and lap-band

Recommended Posts

I hope this isn't too personal of a question. But I was wondering if you are allowed to take an anti-depressant and get the lap-band? I haven't even had my consult yet, but I was wondering if me being on something like that will have an effect on my psyc evaluation?

Hi,

I wouldn't think any medication should be a problem for getting the band. I take elavil for Fibromyalgia and still take it. Of course, I also take Lortab, but have to crush them before taking them. The elavil is very small, so once I am allowed solid foods, I will take it whole.

Hope this helps.

Judy

Amber, I take two antidepressants and medication for mania. I have bipolar 1 disorder. This had absolutely nothing to do with my taking the psych eval or anything else. You might have to find out about crushing your meds if you can't get them down. I've had no problem with that, however. Anyway, don't worry. I think it will go fine for you!! Hope this eases your mind a bit. Keep us posted on how your preliminary requirements for the surgery are progressing!!

Thank you for the quick response! that makes me feel better! I was worried since I was on a mood altering med that that I would be an automatic no. Good to know! And I definately plan on sticking around, I'm so glad I found this board!

Nope. Shouldn't be a problem. I take Lexapro and I had no probs getting approved. I'm scheduled for surgery on 7/25/07. Woohoo!!

If they disqualified people for being on anti-depressants, the LapBand people would have to go out of business!! From reading the boards the last two years, I'm guessing the majority of us are on them. Or at least at the time of consult we were. Many people are able to come off them when the weight starts to go and life begins to look a little better.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
