So I am 12 days post sleeve

I have had a pretty rough time

The pain the first week was just awful

Things have improved but I still on pain killers occasionally and get some sharp pain when I eat

I have had very little instruction or support from my surgical and dietician team

I know I am to be on fluids, but the Optifast is so disgusting my mother in law made me some purée Soup, I have only had one small bowl a day

2 days ago I had some cream of chicken soup made with Water and skim milk and I think I ate to much to fast and became very unwell

Although I did not vomit I felt like I need to and had to lye down for about half an hour until it passed

I have attempted to contact my surgeon but no one ever rings me back

I so scared o have damaged my sleeve

I seem to be hungry all the time and the hunger pains are painful

I still have occasional left shoulder pain...although I think this is muscular and am completely exhausted

I have no nause now and no fevers

Plus I went back to work 2 days ago

I don't know what to do

Honey that sucks without support - I am 9 days post op- I'm on a liquid diet - that means puréed foods- I have Soups and yoghurt throughout the day and dietitian recommended it as well as some Protein Shakes - shouldn't of damaged sleeve :( if worried about intense pain and no one is ringing you back- go emergency room to be on the safe side :)

Sorry you got such little direction on the post-op diet side. My doctor/team gave me a big binder with detailed pre/post op instructions, including diet. At day 10 I was allowed full fluids which included yogurt and pureed soups/chili. The first batch of Wendy's chili coming out of my blender was fantastic. Yogurt also saved me as the Dannon light and fit yogurt went down very well and has 12 grams of Protein. Not sure who you can contact, but I would be pretty demanding of getting some support. I had pager and office phone as well as email addresses for my doctor, dietician, and surgery coordinator. All have been very responsive when I've had questions.

Since your surgeon didn't give you much information, you should probably get a book. There are several out there that give good information about the post op diet. You can also search on the internet, but be careful with that. You can't believe everything on the internet, including what people say on Bariatric Pal, lol! However, here are my thoughts:

At this stage, you should be progressing very slowly with your diet. I had to be on full liquids for the first 17 days. That means shakes, strained cream Soups, Jello. The pureed Soup your mother in law made is probably good, too. After that I progressed to soft foods, which meant cottage cheese, pudding, hot cereals (cream of wheat), scrambled eggs, etc.

Make sure to measure your food, and eat slowly. No more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup at a time. Only eat 4 times a day, and no grazing. As for what feels like hunger, it might be acid. Get some over the counter Prilosec and give that a try.

And keep after your surgeon. Don't let them ignore your concerns. One other thing, it does get better. I still remember how bad I felt for the first 4-6 weeks.

Good luck!

Morning from the cold state of Connecticut.

Here is what I was told when I had my surgery on 11/21/14.

1. First two weeks - liquids only (absolutely no food because I was healing)

2. 3-6 weeks - I could have mushy foods (which was amazing. oatmeal, scrambled eggs, Cream of wheat, etc)

3. 7weeks - ?? - I could start eating foods, but one at a time.

Having the new tummy, you have to think like you are a baby. What would you feed a baby at 12 days old?

When I was told to eat 2 teaspoons every 2 hours. I actually did this and felt full all the time. I actually ate like this up to my 7 weeks. I now still eat every 2 hours, but I try to get in 3 oz of food. My calorie intake is suppose to be 1200 calories a day, I can only seem to get in 685 calories per day.

Breakfast, have anything you like it does not have to be a Breakfast food. My dietitian asked me to stop the normal routine of the way I was eating food and have a fun time. So if I wanted Soup for breakfast, then so be it.

Calorie intake: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner = 300 calories Snacks (3) = 100 calories

But again, this does not start until after the 7 weeks post-surgery.

As for exercise. I mostly walked and still do. I am not allowed to do stomach crunches yet, but can go to the gym and work on my arms and legs.

I hope this helps. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Annamarie

Thank you all

David I am on australia so it might be hard

I am seeing my GP on Monday to get another dietician

It looks like I am sound what you have all been told....except for the time I ate far to much soup!

I was worried that the home made Soup may not have been classed as a liquid...I suppose it would go up a thick straw! But then others are on Jello which doesn't go up a straw?

That is what has me most confused

I will be two weeks in Monday so I will try and contact my suregeon again!

But it sounds like I'd I wanted to have a couple of mouthfuls of scrambled eggs that would be ok?

I have plenty of Protein shakes so I will just stick to those for another few weeks

What's done is done with the soup and I'm not sick yet!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
