So today I went to month two of my sixth month physican required visit. The MA asked if I would also allow my DR. to bring in a student .... I said sure no problem.

Well lil miss student comes in before my Dr.

Goes over my chart and sees since my first visit ( last month) I have lost 8 pounds. She asks what I'm doing/ what changes have I made. I give her my list

Cut out soda

Cut out breads, rice, sweets, potatos

Increased Water intake

Walking for an hr 2-3 times a week

Eating Protein first

Eating slower

More so than any one change I have had an epiphany and I'm ready to face all of my challenges with weight head on. I will be having bariactric surgery and I really want to use these six month to start making the changes to be successful.

Automatically her face changes and she gives me the most snooty look and says " are you sure you really want to do that?" Like " have you researched it???" .... " right now you are doing it the " right" way" . She then follows with

" you may think that wls is appealing but the long term effects are horrible"

I then tell her of course I researched it I would not remove a portion of an organ from my body and not know the risk/ or complications of doing so. As far as the long term effects, the long term effects of being morbidly obese are far greater . And there is no right way to lose weight. I have 136 pounds to lose that's more than what you probably weigh. There is nothing " appealing" about coming to the realization that you are in a constant battle with food/diets/scale and Im making changes in my lifestyle and with this surgery to face these challenges head on.

Lil miss snooty face had nothing to say after that and sat in the corner of the room and observed when dr entered and conducted the rest of the visit.

One down and I am sure many more to go.... I'm prepared and excited about this journey!!!!!

Good for you to have the confidence to confront her attitude with the information you gained from all your research! Well done.

Ooh, I would have ripped that student to pieces and I would have made sure to do it in front of the doctor. I was a student in medical offices when I was younger and I likely made my fair share of stupid comments, but I think the lessons I learned the most are when someone put me in my place. I hope I wasn't as rude as the woman in your office because I would also hope I would never make uneducated statements like that, but damn...I'd be pretty annoyed if I was you!

Hopefully you've educated that future doctor. Get em while they're fresh!

I would also tell my actual doctor about the way she handled it...very unprofressional

Congrats for standing up for yourself. That can be really hard to do when you are obese and a skinny ass person is lecturing on how you "should" tackle your disease of obesity. She has no idea.

I changed doctors over this kind of ignorant thinking. My previous primary care doctor really broke the last straw when she told me I just needed to buy the right cookbooks. You know, if i could make food in a crockpot like she did surely I would be skinny like her. I was floored, stunned and frankly felt like she was speaking from a different planet. I never went back to her because we had no common ground to work with.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

she is inexperienced etc

but stupidity is not an excuse

long term effects are horrible"

are you kidding me!!?? :o

you were great with your come back to that "snooty" person

talk to the "real" doc

tell him/her how rude the student was

give him example of what she was crazy enough to say

tell him what you are doing in preparation for surgery

you met with him before?

if you liked him stay with him

make sure to tell him that no way no how do you want to see that student again

she was very rude - no need to have to endure her mouth!!

if he says something like "sorry you have to work with her, we need to train people"

say thanx but no thanx!!!

you have been doing everything perfectly

you've done your research

sounds like you are ready to start your new life :)

continue to speak up for yourself

keep up the good work

i know you will!!!!

good luck bud :)

WHAT!

THE!

f**k!

I really can't believe that happened. If that'd been me, I'd have thrown her out of the room.

I mean it. Thrown her out of the room.

And maybe changed doctors.

All of this happened prior to my doctor entering the room ( she reviewed my chart, weight, blood work ) after I put her in her place she didn't have anything else to say.

I love my doctor and she is super supportive of this decision and was so proud that I've lost 8 pounds by making these life style changes to prepare for surgery.

I just feel bad for whatever obese/overweight person finds themselves in the hands of that student!!!!! I did make a complaint with the front office and said I never want another student to sit in on my visit again!

I don't expect everyone ( especially ppl who have never walked a day in our shoes) to understand this process but I be damned if I will stand for rude disrespectful comments!!! Thanks guys/gals for all the support and comments!

People who have never been overweight just don't understand the struggle! Good for you for being able to take control of that situation and not allow her to look down her nose at you for trying to become healthier!

I admire your handling of this but I think you are also giving her too easy of a pass. Anybody trained in medicine in the last decade must surely recognize the obesity epidemic and how few can manage it without surgery once morbidly obese. I have skinny ass friends who are Barbie doll types, not medically trained who were more understanding than this doctor in training.

I do not think I need to have blocked arteries to understand the need for bypass, I don't need to be a diabetic to understand need for insulin. I don't buy the premise that only obese people can understand. Again, you did the right thing completely but don't ever think a medical person has any permission to judge you just because he/she isn't obeses

Sadly in my life the least supportive people are obese. My skinny friends were over the moon for me. A very trim, polished and georgeous senior executive at my company congratulated me privately after I maintained for a year. She guessed (but no big deal) I'd had WLS. Her comment to me was she'd seen plenty of people have massive weight loss but so few maintain it. She was very very complimentary and she is a stick by my standards. :) I am fine if people are indifferent to my health journey but they don't get a pass just because they are skinny.

I'm glad you complained to someone. I would have told the doc I wanted her to leave, and explained why after she had left.

She won't get far with a bedside manner like that!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
