Return to work/physical job

Recommended Posts

Just curious if any of you guys have physical jobs, when you were able to return to work. In both meetings with my surgeon he said 4 weeks. The PA at my pre-op testing told me 6 weeks. My job will give me as much time as I need, I'm just trying to plan. THANKS.

You need to consider the demands of your job. Many here have bounced back quickly. However, your age and your overall health now will make a difference. You will be tired. There's a lot of healing going to be happening and a lot of adjustments for your body. I would say a lot of people felt ready to work in about two weeks and that four weeks was enough for most everybody.

Nonetheless, although most of the time everything goes smoothly, I happened to end up with a serious complication. Fortunately my work was flexible enough for me to be able to adjust my schedule to give me some more time. So, to be on the safe side, regardless of what you decide, you might want to consider a contingency plan in case you need an extra week or two to be job ready.

Good luck!!

I scheduled 3 weeks off, and at 1 week post op, that still seems about right for me. I figure if I need more or less time I can always adjust.

My surgeon's standard is 3 weeks, but he and I agreed that 4 weeks was better for me (night shift Nurse at a busy hospital). If the surgeon is saying 4 and the PA is saying 6 - split the difference and go with 5? you're going to be at minimal risk for re-injury at that point, but you're still likely to get tired easily. That's going to take a while to change.

@@efierke I am taking just 2 weeks off, work in a busy ICU. Got me thinking I might need more time off.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
