Anyone have trouble sleeping after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! Ok, so, I used to be able to take naps, and get a full 8 hours no problem. I am two weeks post surgery, and I can maybe get 5 hours a night, and then I'm wide awake and raring to go. Even now, I am sick, and would love nothing more than to sleep, but I'm wide awake on here. Anyone else have this issue? What did you do?

I was a chronic insomniac for over 30 years. Since surgery I've now become a sometimes insomniac. Sometimes I sleep, 5 to 6 hrs, which is alot for me; and sometimes I revert back to my my old ways. But when I do sleep I feel so rested and love it! Hope the sleeping thing works out for you soom. For me, when I'm able to get restful sleep, it's a beautiful thing. Best.

It's not just me then! I went to bed at 11:45 tonight, even though I laid in bed starting at 9, and I woke up at 3:50. This is so annoying. I'm going to see my general doc tomorrow, and she also works with the Bariatric team, I'm going to ask her for suggestions. I will let you all know what she says.

I loved the fact that my sleeping decreased so much after surgery. I feel just as good after 5 hours of sleep as I used to feel after 9 hours. I chalk it up to not eating so much at night. Now, my body can concentrate on healing and recouperation, rather than digesting 1000's of calories while I'm asleep. B)

I take melatonin and sometimes benadryl. Benadryl is basically the PM in Tylenol PM

I have struggled with insomnia for years also. After surgery, I would be wide awake about four hours after going to bed. I am not four months out and it is getting better, although I still only get a solid six hours of sleep. I also take melatonin (there is a fast dissolve formula and Tylenol pm and those work pretty well for me. Sometimes I feel like the meds don't last as long with my new stomach...like it is digested quicker before it is completely dissolved/absorbed?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
