Difference between success and failure

Still sorting out whether I should go through with this or not, and the biggest fear I have is failing - or in my eyes - losing the weight only to regain as I have done every other time. I have seen so many with long term success but unfortunately have met many who have gained the weight back and honestly are worse off now because of the malabsorbtion. Is this a normal fear? If so, how did you get past it? And what was your difference that made you successfully keep the weight off / get & stay healthy?

With our history or losing and gaining multiple times, of course it's normal to feel some terpidation. And you can help yourself by knowing tha you probably will gain back at least some of what you lost. There are statistics out there the can help you understand the percentages. I put back so much, that I opted for a revision. I have no regrets. But no, this is not a cure. For me, I feel my weight has always been, and WILL always be , an issue. But the decision to do this has been one wild rider and I only wish I had done it sooner!

@@Daisee68 You're right -- there are people that are wildly successful and people who do not lose weight (or as much) with the surgery. The difference in surgery and another diet is that the surgery gives you a great tool to help you be successful. More than just a coach or someone to talk to or an appetite supressant, you get your body on board to eat smaller portions and to have negative reinforcement over poor food choices (at least with bypass you get dumping syndrome with too many carbs or fat). No pill or person can give you that.

I think it's a perfectly normal fear and probably 99% of the people on these boards have worried that they will not be successful. In my case, I lost more than I had dreamed I could and I'm lower than the goal I had set for myself. Think my body had a different goal in mind. I know there is a possibility that I might regain but I also know that it's within my control now and I've developed a new lifestyle of healthier food and exercise, so I'm doing what I can to avoid regain.

I agree with the above statement we are fear that we will regain the weight. I think its natural to have this feeling I am now 9almost 9 months post opt and I still have weight to loose , I am now focusing on one day at a time and eating correctly, I still work out 5 days per week although I have hit a stall but I am pushing forward.

Thanks all! The advice really helps. I have got to look at this as a tool and forced life change (in many ways) and not just a diet. I met with psychologist today for my evaluation and she said a lot of stuff that made sense. I am going to meet with her probably 5 or 6 more times before surgery so she can help me sort through my food issues. I meet with nutritionist tomorrow for 1st meeting. Each step I get closer definitely helps and advice from all of you has really made a difference.

The idea of failure does me a great favor as it helps me stay on track. I really want to honor the gift of this surgery so I can stay on track. I can see that I am making new habits that increase my chances of success. That is the knowledge that I hang on to. Good luck.

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
