Just getting started

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I have been reading posts and exploring this website for a couple months now. I had my consult with the physician, behavioral medicine, nutrition and physical therapy. I haven't joined the six week class that they require yet, but I'm on the waiting list. Despite all this, I am feeling a little discouraged, I was really hoping the surgery would come sooner than what it seems. I know it will all be worth it in the end, and that none of these changes will come easy, but is there any other way to feel a little more control over the whole process?!

No unless you are self pay. Otherwise it's just go through the process.

A few things I suggest you work on that they may not have told you to do is work on eating more Protein. You have to post-op so it helps to already be in the habit. Likewise with eating really slow, chewing your food until it dissolves and separating your eating from drinking by at least a 30 minute window before and after.

If you smoke or drink sodas, now is the time to stop. They are no-no's for surgery and bariatric diets.

Join a gym or start some sort of exercise program. These will all be part of your life post-op.

I started the process back in October 2014 and am having my sleeve tomorrow. At first I was bummed it took so long, but now I see it as a blessing. Learning the new habits took time and I was able to take the time to incorporate each one into my lifestyle. I spent the time doing lots of reading (wish I had known about this forum sooner), mentally preparing, and doing things to make my post-op weeks as easy on myself as possible (making freezer meals for my family, catching up on housework and paperwork, etc.) Don't worry, it will be here sooner than you think!

Started my process in December. I have to do a 6 month supervised diet, so I am in Month 2 of that. The waiting is making me crazy! These boards help and myfitnesspal is my new best friend. Congrats on getting started!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
