Anyone have suggestions for preparing for surgery and recovery?

Recommended Posts

Surgery day came, my doctor n hospital staff where amazing, thank god gor that. After surgery I woke up and was still feeling the anesthesia so I was loopy and of course sore. But I got up and started walking. You're pretty shaky n walking makes you tired, but that's what helps you with the gas. The gas was the worst part, I was not passing it from my hotyom and I could feel it rumbling around my tummy, it was the worst on the second day for me, i felt i was gonna rip into two at times. The pain meds n nausea meds helped, but it was just really uncomfortable. But yoy gotta keep pushing yourself to walk and walk and walk. On that second day they started me on liquids, but they decided to stop after I had a couple episodes of vomiting. Mind you it was not the gas, or the liquids that was the issue, but phlem. My throat was so dry, but I could feel a ball of phlem at the back of my throat, so if I trued to just swallow my spit it went over it and grossed me out. Or if I tried to blow my nose, I will feel it tugg from my nose and I would start hacking it out my throat. Also my nose was so dry, I got a few bloody noses from blowing. On the third day, the gas was there but it was not as uncomfortable, once again I walked my ass off every few hrs, they got me back on fluids, off pain meds and kept me on nausea meds just in case. My abdomen was sore due to the incisions, but nothing unbearable. They devided to keep me another day, just cause of the vomiting, they wanted to make sure I would be taken care off if that happened. Today is my fourth day and I'm feeling much better. I finally passed some gas through my bottom, Im walking more and feel lucid but tired. So im just focusing on taking my 1 fl oz every 30 minutes, walking and sitting straight up, since that helps with the gas, but even that is not painful but still just uncomfortable. It's really important that you follow the docs orders and push yourself to be as compliant as you can. You would be surprised how many people just wanted yo be discharged the day after surgery without going through the proper steps. I did bring gas strips, bur my doc suggested I didn't use them yet, so he will let me know when it is safe to do so. Let me know if you guys have any questions, I'm glad to answer them. But the truth is, we will all heal differently and will experience different issues, but one thing you need to prepare for, is to be strong and compliant.

Ocean State Job Lot....... where are you in MA I haven't heard that name in a long time.

I plan on visiting Blackstone MA. in Sept. My surgery is on March 3rd. and I'm concerned about what my family will say about my weight loss. I haven't told them about my upcoming VSG and really don't want to. I'm hoping that I can get by with just "being on a diet" or " eating healthy" I think its all they need to know.

Yes I'm in MA on the CT border. I've been very open with everyone about my surgery because it will be obvious to others how slow you are eating. This way they don't question me or comment.

Where will you be having your surgery? Mine was at Baystate. I pre- made a ton of meals and froze them in small containers.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
